I'm early on my journey, had a Spindle Cell Melanoma full excised. Clear PET scan and WLE SLN removal due in January. I keep reading about Melanoma going to brain but I haven't been offered an MRI.. I'm seeing my oncologist on Wednesday, should I mention it.? Keep feeling quite terrified

  • Hi Essexgirl2000 welcome to the forum.. I don't know enough about what you are asking about re Melanoma. However,  as you are seeing the Consultant on wednesday it seems sensible to raise this with them and see what they think?

  • Hi   - I didn't have an MRi or CT scan until after my WLE and SLNB as they wanted to see the results of those and if it had spread before going any further with investigations. As soon as I had the results showing the melanoma had spread to a lymph node they requested both scans for me and I had them within a few weeks. I would definitely ask your oncologist whether they plan on giving you an MRi as you're seeing them tomorrow, it never hurts to ask.

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply

  • Hi I had a ct and mri just after I was diagnosed before surgery and lymph node biopsy I think it depends on how thick the melanoma is mine was nearly 2mm.

  • Mine is 6.2!! Terrified... Seeing Oncologist for first time today. I'm hearing MRI may be done after SNLB

  • Do you mean the size of mole or the breslow -how deep it has gone.

  • Hope goes OK with oncologist.

  • The depth. It wasn't a mole, like a pink raised bump

  • Mine was a flesh coloured bump too, which threw the dermatologist, as he thought it was a basal cell carcinoma.  So it was a real shock to find out that it was a melanoma.
Hope everything went well with the oncologist and that you managed to get answers to your questions.  There seems to be so much to learn at this stage.
I have WLE and SLNB at the end of this month and I’m feeling very nervous about the op and the results.
Good luck with your op.  xx

  • I'm very impressed with my Oncologist and I start a year of immunotherapy in January. Very mixed emotions of fear, hope and anger. It has been officially recognised that an error was made when I first had it removed in 2022. I was told it was benign when it was cancer, allowing it to carry on growing to 6.2.mm My oncologist is fuming and described this as catastrophic ! 7 years ago my grandson was still born at 37 weeks due to midwife error, NHS admitted negligence. I will be perusing this as it could have an impact on my outcome, x
