Second WLE not successful - what next?

Hi,

My mum has been going through this journey for almost a year to treat 2 moles. On one of the moles the WLE still had cancerous cells on the edge so she had a second back in June. She was originally told that it was stage 1a for this particular mole.

Unfortunately she had to wait 15 weeks for a follow up appointment instead of the promised 8 weeks, despite trying to get in contact with nurses and secretaries and finally had an appointment recently. We found out that they found melanoma still within the margins they would like to see so needs further treatment.

She has been suggested to have imiquimod cream treatment once the wound is fully healed. Has anyone had similar experiences? It seems like she has been neglected through every stage and I am not sure what we can do to help.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the melanoma group.

It must be upsetting for your mum to need a second WLE and then to find that there are still cancer cells present. I haven't had imiquimod but have found these posts for you to have a look through which mention it.

    You say that

she has been neglected through every stage and I am not sure what we can do to help

One avenue is to speak to the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) at the hospital where she has been treated. Part of their role is to help resolve concerns or problems. Every hospital has one so you could give them a call.

When you have a minute, it would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi I'm sorry I don't have any experience as yet of using chemotherapy cream but I am due to commence a 6 week course next week. I too had a WLE three weeks ago and bad cells were found in the margins . I was told the results over the phone and asked if I had any questions on the call but as I was not prepared for the results I couldn't think of questions at the time. I have loads of questions now lol. I have been under the care of dermatology for 3 years but due to the hospital cancelling appointments X3  there was a year between the appointments. I feel just so sad, angry the works. Please let me know how your mam gets on . I wish her well . X
