Looking for any guidance on how long it will take to have WLE after a positive diagnosis if anyone is able to share their experience. Are there any NICE guidelines for this?

Thanks

  • Hi

I'm sorry to read that you've had a positive melanoma diagnosis and I know what a shock this is likely to have been.

When I had my WLE I also had a SLNB (sentinel lymph node biopsy) at the same time and it was about 10 weeks between being told I had melanoma to having the operations done. If you are having a WLE with no SLNB then it's likely to be quicker as you won't need a general anaesthetic and, therefore there are less hospital personnel involved.

Clicking here will take you to the NICE guidelines on assessing melanoma but, having had a quick look through, I can't see that it gives a recommendation on time between diagnosis and having a WLE.

The best person to ask how quickly you are likely to be seen in your area of the country would be your skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS), sometimes referred to as a keyworker or Macmillan nurse.

When you have a minute it would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. My husband was diagnosed on the 28th feb and had his WLE and sentinel lymph node biopsy at the same time 13 weeks later at end of May. I do believe it is much quicker if you are only having the WLE though. Best of luck to you.

  • i was diagnosed with a positive diagnosis on the 8th of febuary this year and i had my WLE done on the 19th of june
