Potential local recurrence

Hi,

I had a stage 1b melanoma removed from my calf last year (June-August for main treatment). In the last week I've noticed 2 raised bumps appear very close to the WLE scar - and they look very similar to the original lesion I had that evolved into a melanoma (amelanotic, so not a darker mole like most). Obviously I've booked in for an appointment with the same GP who sorted my initial excision (pre WLE & SLNB at hospital), but that check up is not for another week or so. I'm not stressed about this change as if it is some sort of recurrence I'm pretty sure we are on to it quite early. However I am curious if any others here have had a recurrence at the original site, and if so how far away from the WLE scar was it? These 2 lesions are still very small but definitely new and approximately 1cm from the WLE scar line.

Thanks!

  • Hi

I too was diagnosed with an amelanotic melanoma, although mine was nearly 8 years ago now and, thankfully, it hasn't recurred.

I wanted to pop on to say that you shouldn't need to start the referral process from scratch again. As an existing melanoma patient you should have been given the contact details of a skin cancer nurse specialist (SCNS) who is your first point of contact if you're worried about a recurrence or find something on your skin that you're worries about. I have had to contact mine a couple of times over the years and have been in front of the consultant a few days later. Do give yours a call after the Bank Holiday and hopefully you'll get to see your consultant within a few days.

  • Thanks   Yes, we have a similar set up here in NZ where I still do have a nurse contact at the hospital (and am in their system for checks over next few years). Where I live is 3hrs drive away from the hospital though, so I'm going to my local GP (also a skin cancer specialist) in the first instance. He did the initial excision so I'm sure will be able to assess and biopsy as needed. I'll update in here how it all unfolds (false alarm or back into the same procedures as last time).

  • Ah, sorry! I didn't realise you were in new Zealand, although I should have done from your username.

  • Not at all!. I've come to realise this is a UK based website/forum so I hope its ok I still post here. Seems a lot of our processes and standards here follow the UK and US.  Fortunately the 2 bumps faded by the time I had my GP visit (yesterday). Discussed it with him (had photos). Because my original melanoma looked just like a little pimple initially, we both agreed that I need to be super vigilant on anything new that appears that wont go away in a short time. Better to be safe than sorry.

  • That's great to hear that the bumps have gone but I agree that we need to be extra vigilant.

    Take care
