Hi everyone.
My mum has been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma today, with three lesions in her brain, two tumors in her liver, one in her lungs and I think some others scattered around her body. It's obviously been a very tough day for my family, especially after she had a local-regional recurrence in May, but we're determined to help my amazing mum put up a good fight and will do whatever we can to support her.
She will be having targeted radiotherapy to remove the tumors in her brain (due to the complication of her having a blood clot in her lungs and therefore needing swift treatment so she can take blood thinners), and combined Ipi/Nivo, possibly starting next week.
I know Ipi/Nivo is potentially less effective for patients who have already received a single course of immunotherapy, although it's still possible to have a complete or partial response. That is what we're desperately hoping for.
I was wondering if anyone else had experience of this - of being treated first with Nivo and then being offered the combination. I've been looking for positive stories to share with my mum (and found plenty on here, thank you everyone!) but I would love to be able to point out somebody who has been in her situation and come through it. I want to give her as much hope and motivation as possible.
Thank you
Hi Pip93
I've 'spoken' to you on other threads so I know how worried you are about your mum but also what a positive outlook you have towards her treatment.
I can't help with any experience of these drugs but I noticed no one had come forward yet. Responding to you will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be easier to see.
((hugs))
Thanks, Latchbook. Appreciate that! I know people have had a good response after my mum's treatment plan, even if nobody does come forward with a specific story - I'm pretty sure I've found such examples on here, although I'm having trouble digging them out. Thanks for bumping!
Just wanted to post an update. Thrilled today that my mum's been accepted by a specialist brain team in Sheffield who have agreed that she's eligible for an incredible new treatment (only been available in the UK since February) with a 95% success rate. She's having preliminaries next Monday then the treatment on Wednesday, so hopefully by this time next week she will not have any tumours in her brain.
This is a great, great start to treatment for her, and we're so grateful that she's being given the best shot at fighting this horrible disease!
Thanks, Latchbrook. She's over the moon - first good news we've had in ages!
We still don't know how she'll respond to the Ipi/Nivo, but we're hoping that even if she doesn't have a response, this treatment might buy her more time. It just seems incredible the advances that are happening, and what they can do now to help melanoma patients.
We're certainly very hopeful x
Pip

Hi Senojlaup,
Thank you for responding, and I'm so glad your wife has had a 50% reduction. I really appreciate your message and I've passed it on to my mum. I think it helps her to hear people's stories rather than just hearing statistics. I really hope things continue to go well with your wife's treatment.
Take care x
