Preparing for dermatology appointment

Hi all, new here and wondering what to expect…. I had a fast track referral from my GP to a dermatologist for a dodgy looking mole, the appointment is on Monday.  When I saw the GP I also said I had enlarged lymph nodes along my neck and have done for months with no illness to cause it. She didn’t seem interested, didn’t even feel them but I’m worried it’s connected and the possible melanoma is a secondary cancer.  Might it be or am I being paranoid? Should I mention this to the dermatologist?

Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

You will probably find that when you visit the dermatologist tomorrow they will examine the mole that you have been referred about with an instrument called a dermatoscope. It's effectively a magnifying glass which enables the dermatologist to examine your mole in greater detail.

Some consultants will automatically check the rest of your body for any other suspicious lesions but, if yours doesn't, do take the opportunity to point out any other moles you're concerned about. Also mention to the consultant about your enlarged lymph nodes, although again, they would normally check the lymph nodes closest to the mole.

What happens next will depend on what the consultant thinks about your mole. They may decide to make you an appointment to have the mole removed and sent off for biopsy, they may ask you to come back in a few months to see if it has changed, they may arrange for you to come back every so often to have photos taken or, best of all, they may say it's nothing to worry about and send you on your way.

Do come back after your appointment tomorrow to let us all know how you got on.

  • Hi, thank you for your response.  Mole ok, the dermatologist was happy there was no cancer risk and she had a quick look at my back. It was all very rushed and she wasn’t interested in my lymph nodes so I’ll go back to my GP about that but I’m feeling more reassured.  Thanks again for your 1st reply it did make me feel more prepared

  • That's great news

Hopefully the lymph nodes will just be fighting an infection.
