Hi
I had my WLE & SLNB in December, SLNB was Clear, unfortunately they found a new melanoma within my WLE, surgeon has recommended I have another WLE but will require a skin graft this time, does anyone have any advice or experience they can share, surgeon is going to use my thigh for donor site.
Any advice appreciated
Thanks xx
Split skin graft still got dressing on it my surgery was 5 weeks ago but dressing have been changed a couple of times maybe they will be removed tomorrow.
Hi Miss Mole,
Good luck tomorrow! I hated my donor site so much because it was sooooooo unbelievably itchy. It was such a relief when the scab fell off (must say I encouraged it a bit by massaging around the area...). Now, 3 years later, there's barely any sign on my thigh that it was used as a donor site. It healed really beautifully. Yours will, too!
Thanks yeah mines so itchy now and again so annoying especially when it starts itching when go to bed.
Hi thanks for this. Can you remember about how long until you can drive as I’m assuming until the stitches are out which could be 3 weeks as I can’t put any shoes on at present
Hi KDaz,
Yes, basically once the huge bandage came off and stitches were out, I was able to drive. I could only wear very soft shoes or supportive walking shoes initially but I can wear all my normal shoes now.
Grand that’s fine as they said another 14 days possibly and will be 7 days tomorrow over it x
How long after your graft until you wore normal trainers should I be able to wear winter boots once its healed and should I wear a dressing when wearing boots or trainers at the moment I'm wearing soft trainer mules.
Hi Miss Mole,
I started wearing trainers as soon as the big bandage around my foot was removed. I still had the soft plaster and vaseline paper to cover the graft every day. But I taped some soft foam padding (basically makeup remover pads) to the outside of the plaster to cushion the area. Then I wore really nice soft socks. People said gel insoles might help with the cushioning. I tried them but didn't like them, but perhaps they might work for you. I walked a bit funny for a few weeks because my foot gave me what I would describe as an "electric shock" each time I stepped, but I was just happy to be mobile again! There's still a little bit of that "electric shock" feeling now, probably nerve damage, but it honestly doesn't bother me anymore and I've climbed up mountains since!
