Hello
My 92yr old mom is due to start this within the next week.
Not sure she understands what she has consented to. She understands that if she experiences any side effects she can stop immediately.
Does anyone know if stopping IB that the side effects will cease at once or until the meds are free from her body.
Dear I have a different blood cancer to your mum, but I can talk about treatment principles in general. I am a great believer that patients should always be able to give fully informed consent to treatment. The doctors obviously feel she still has capacity to make her own decisions despite having some dementia. The question here is really what course of action is likely to deliver the best quality of life given her advanced years, active treatment or palliative care. It’s not my place to impose my opinion but I think both options should be weighed up carefully examined and extending longevity should not be allowed to crowd out talk of other options. As you say the therapy can be stopped if there are any side effects that cause distressing symptoms. You may find it helpful to read my latest post in the end of life group called a foot in both camps as it describes a philosophy of a dual approach to address a situation such as your mums.
