Hi, looking for some advice please. Totally distraught as my Mum has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer which has spread around the heart and lymph nodes. She only got diagnosed last week (told she has a few months to live)but has had some symptoms for a couple of months. She's got a feeding tube as she can't swallow anymore. She can only have chemo if she can put weight on and get more strength.
I think she will need some support mentally and so will my Dad who is in denial at the moment.
Is there anyone we can contact so they can talk to them about their emotions etc?
Any other advice would be welcomed about anything to do with this as it's fresh, raw and a total shock Thank you.
Hi Sazzycat
I am sorry you have had to come here, but you are very welcome.
I do not have the answers, i hope others pop in and give you an answer.
You can get in touch with the GP all GP,s can help, you can phone Macmillan the number is at the start of the site
Its real early days for you all and yes denial and mind all over the place is some thing we all feel when diagnosed.
Will they be offering your mum any treatment what is the next step did they say,
I belong to the incurable group and there are a lot there past our sell by dates.
Drs can say weeks months years but they do not really know every one is so different, and all depends on any treatment that is given.
Chemo is hard on ones body, so can be really hard, hopefully your mum will put weight on and get more strength, your gp can prescribe energy drinks for her and that will help.
If she can start eating full fat is good, mash potato put butter, cream in it that sort of thing, grated cheese.
I hope you get others in to give more ideas.

Hi Sazzycat
So very sorry that you have cause to be on here.
Your Mum's hospital may have in-house Clinical Psychologists/Therapists to provide support; her cancer team will be able to make the referral. Also talking to the good people at MacMillan may help; the free-phone number is 0808 808 00 00.
As for the putting on weight; Ellie 73's advice is sound. Mum needs to eat little and often with high calorific food such as full fat dairy products, cream cake etc. Basically anything of high calorific content that can be liquidised for use with the feeding tube. Now is not the time for healthy eating. Do you have a hospice near to you; if yes, give them a ring and ask about the sort of foods that can be prepared for use with feeding tubes.
Finally, please make sure that you also look after your own well-being.
Kegsy x
Thanks Ellie. She had her Peg fitted today so hoping we can go forward with putting weight on from here. She hasn't had her oncology appointment yet (well I don't think! It's so hard as we can't be with her due to a ban on visiting and it's hard to get hold of the doctors) so not sure what they will.offer. they mentioned chemo but only if strength gets up. They said a lot trial drugs go to younger patients (she's 79) but we will fight for what we can get x
