Hello, my partner was diagnosed in March of this year with a stage 4 pancoast tumour, a rare type of lung cancer. It has been a 2 year journey for the diagnosis as this type of cancer is not the easiest to diagnose and unfortunately is almost always found at late stage. He has had his 1st round of chemo and immunotherapy and unfortunately due to his white blood cells becoming very low he developed neutropenic sepsis about 10 days after a very serious infection. He spent a week in hospital receiving various IVs, hydration, antibiotics and others. He came home yesterday. The oncologist has put back his next treatment by 1 week as a precaution and lowered the dose of chemo to prevent this happening again. It would be great to hear from anyone and just share things a little.
Hi Michelle21
welcome to the group, but I am sorry to hear about your partner. I have been a member of the online community for several years now, and have met a handful of members who have had a pancoast tumour, so I know how rare it is. My lung cancer is also rare, mine is a sarcoma which started in my womb in 2009, so I’ve been on this path a long time.
I am sorry to hear that the treatment has led to sepsis and a hospital stay. That must of been very worrying for you. Slightly different, but my sister had sepsis and had to spend a week in hospital whilst having chemo for her breast cancer. Her sepsis was caused by a paper cut! Something that would normally heal quite quickly, but became very serious.
Many people have had chemo appointments put back for a week or 2 for one reason or another, so don’t worry that it is going to be late. Hopefully the lower dose will be better, but I am sure they will keep a very close eye on your partner next time.
I hope you find the forum useful. There is usually someone here to chat with. We don’t always know the answers, but we do know what you are both going through.
Thank you for your message this horrible thing has affected so many lives. I am trying so hard to grab any kind of normal from now on and enjoy and not take for granted all the amazing things around me. We live in Spain and the treatment so far has been very good. I am continuing to work in the UK on a part time basis which I enjoy very much. This helps to give my partner some time for him but also needs careful planning around appointments and his care, it's exhausting and so many other things that I am sure we all experience but as a community we will get through this. Thinking of us all.
