Hi all, i have just been diagnosed with sclc. In lung and nodes and MRI btain scan done Friday, await outcome.

Consultant suggested chemo and radiotherapy.

I am frightened of the future, sad the cancer is so agressive, with poor prognosis.

Feeling sad, guilty, frightened and my world is turned upside down.

Is there anyone with a similar diagnosis?

I hate being a burden to my daughters, friends

  • Hi Kranky

So very sorry that you have cause to be on here.

I was diagnosed with SCLC way back in August 2011 (yes 2011, not a typo),  I too had the MRI scan of the brain; it is routine for SCLC to ensure it has not spread to the brain,

I had 4 cycles of chemo, with each cycle being over 3 days. Alongside the chemo I had 33 days of radiotherapy Mon to Friday (with weekends off).  SCLC does respond well to chemo, in terms of shrinking the tumour, which means the radiotherapy  has a smaller target to aim at. Since my treatment, chemo has been made a lot kinder, with less/reduced side effects.

I would urge you to listen to the recommendations of your Consultant, although the treatment will be tough,it is very much doable.

I wish you the best possible outcomes.

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis.

My friend was diagnosed with SCLC back in August 2023, although just in her lung, the lymph nodes and brain scan were clear.  She was treated with chemotherapy alone which shrunk the large tumour to almost nothing.  SCLC responds very well to chemotherapy.  After her chemotherapy she was put on a course of immunotherapy.  She will be three years this August and she is doing really well and getting on with life as normal.

She was also told SCLC is an aggressive cancer, but it is only a "poor prognosis" if NOT treated.  So please, don't be worried or scared, treatments today do wonders.  There are people on this forum who have been diagnosed with SCLC and I'm sure they will reply with their experiences.

My advice would be to think of the positive and don't dwell on the negative, and don't think of yourself as a "burden".  I have had cancer twice in my lifetime; breast cancer stage 2 in 1991, and lung cancer in 2023.  I am the eternal optimist and always look to the positive.

    Best wishes.

  • Many thanks for your kind and positive words.

I am still in shock and trying to get my head around everything, overwhelming.

    I wish everyone a healthy outcome x

  • Thank you for your most positive words. It has given me hope and determination to take on whatever is thrown at me. To be honest, it made me cry.  Up until now, everything sounded so bleak. People saying it reacts to chemo but it will come back, real quick etc. I pray my scan is clear of brain but if it is, it needs to be zapped and gone.

I know the road ahead will be tough but i will remain strong and fight.

I have a tooth infection, which needs extraction too  apart from that the rest of my body is in clear and fit. I think consultant said strong enough for chemo and radiation.

Thank you once again for replying so quickly. I hope i can give support like this to a newbie.

    Much love A

  • Aw, I didn't mean to make you cry!

Good to see that you seem much more positive in your reply.

Regarding your dodgy tooth; you do not want to go into cancer treatment with any known infection as the chemo and radiotherapy will reduce your ability to fight infection.  Please ring your dentist and explain the forthcoming cancer treatment and see if he will get you in for an emergency extraction (and a course of antibiotics).  You may want to run this past your Consultant too.

  • Diagnosis of SCLC two weeks ago - out of the blue. My haemoglobin was low which gave me the symptoms of a bit breathless ans low energy.  York Hospital explored and found spread SCLC and put me chemo and immunotherapy super fast. Im 70 in a couple of weeks - so this is a huge shock to my life

I am interested in your story so will follow.
