Hi I’m Susan 3 weeks ago I had what I thought was a lurgy cough felt lousy thought I’d picked something up on a cruise holiday at New Year. Went to see my gp who gave me antibiotics and said I should also have a chest X-ray as it was crackly. A week later didn’t feel a lot better so went back he said it’s clearing up one more dose of antibiotics should sort it out.  2 days later I got a call from the surgery the dr wanted to see me re my X-ray then another call booked me a ct scan . I saw my gp on the morning he said the X-ray shows a large mass in my left lung. I had the ct scan that evening the results came back with a 6.5cm tumour on my left lung. I have never smoked in my life and am in total shock. I have an apt at the chest clinic next week. I feel and look absolutely fine in myself.  Would love to hear how people deal with this. My husband of 50 years is in pieces so are my children.  I’m 68 years old.

  • Oh I’m sorry to hear this. But you are in good hands and the Doctors are moving quickly as they did with me.
I was told on 16th December I need a lower left lung lobectomy. Which happened 3 weeks later on 7th Jan.

I know it’s scary and unfair but please remember we all have a fight in us and a full support system on here and with the Thoracic team. Right questions and worries down or ask on here we are all very open and shared experience.

    best wishes

  • Hi Hayley thank you so much for responding. Wow that was quick for your op. I have been told I need a PET scan lung function test but have apt already booked for consultant on Wednesday so hopefully they will ring tomorrow with my other appointments.  Are you ok after surgery do you have to have chemo? That’s what scares me xx

  • Hayley I do hope you are recovering well x

  • Hi Sue yes I have had a year of problems last April the docs sent me for a scan for lung cancer BUT found I had an aortic root aneurysm that could burst at an any moment. Had open chest surgery on 29th July. They knew I had a node in lung but said they would monitor in 6months. Well had ct to check my op and they found the node had grown quickly and they were worried. So within a month had all the scans, biopsy and consultant.

I am lucky no further treatment at this time but told I have another area on my right lung which they will monitor.
please there are so many options for treatments now just ask the questions.

My wounds healed quickly but internally taking a bit longer the cut goes into your breast tissue and that hurts, I have a couple of numb areas but one day at a time.
Best wishes and please keep in touch

  • SueD, so sorry to hear about your shock at your diagnosis.  Mine was similar to yours - I had a cough that wouldn't clear up, but felt FINE, second appointment with doctor and she sent me for a chest Xray and it showed a 7 cm mass on my right lung (upper right lobe). I was 67.  Total shock.  So they quickly sent me for a CT scan, a lung function test, a PET scan and a CT guided biopsy (after a bronchoscopy which didn't show what they wanted to see).  So I was booked for a lobectomy, then had chemo.  Various other things, but long story short, here I am 9 years later and I've been discharged from care as no evidence of recurrence.  This is tough for you, but if you can go with the flow, just accept all this, live each day fully and be grateful you will get through this difficult time as easily as possible.  There is definitely hope, and there are more treatments available now than ever before.  Keep us posted on your progress!!

  • Hi Pamela thank you so much for sharing your journey l. I must admit I’m terrified and my husband isn’t taking it well either. He’s 10 years older than me and has some issues of his own and I’m supposed to be the strong one looking after him. My daughter her husband and 2 eldest granddaughters together with my son and daughter in law have been fantastic. My husband had a bit of a breakdown on Friday and fell over and had to go to a&e he cut his knee and arm my grandaughter s boyfriend is a paramedic in the marines and luckily was home for the weekend and helped sort him out. I feel guilty that my family are suffering.  I am determined to beat this and really appreciate your support and kind words too xx

  • SueD, that's really tough, that your husband is taking the news so badly and had an accident.  Hopefully, you'll have time to all catch your breath in the next few days, so that you can face the future together.  You really appreciate your family when you find out you have cancer.  Sending best thoughts and lots of strongs for all the tests and scans you'll be going through in the next few days.  <3

  • Hi Sue

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis.  It does come as a shock, and especially to non-smokers.  Unfortunately the risk of getting lung cancer, although lower in non-smokers, is always there.  These risks can be genetic - a large number of people who are non-smokers have a genetic mutation (EGFR), which is apparently more common in women than men.  I was diagnosed with lung cancer in the Summer of 2023 - after genetic testing I was found to have a KRAS gene mutation, which is in about 20-30% of adenocarcinoma cases in ex-smokers or smokers.  I am an ex-smoker.

Environmental factors such as air pollution, second hand smoke and workplace exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos, vehicle emissions or chemicals are also risk factors.

One of the risk factors is Radon gas, which is a naturally occurring gas that emits radiation from the ground and is the second largest risk factor for lung cancer after smoking and causes over a thousand cases of lung cancer per year across the UK.  Certain areas of the UK have higher Radon gas than others, you can see these areas if you use the "Radon Map UK" which is easily found on Google.  Unfortunately I live in a higher than average area in North Wales in the Conwy borough.

Good luck and best wishes with your ongoing investigations and forthcoming treatment, keep in touch, we are all here to help.

    Ann

  • Hi Ann thank you so much for taking the time to share all this important information.  I’m going to google it I live in Lancashire.  Take care and I’ll keep you posted you updated  Susan x

  • Hi Pamela had everything this week pet scan lung function and saw a consultant. The tumour is in the middle of my lower left lobe not near my heart. I have a broncoscopy next week so will find out more. He said they may shrink it before removing it but depends on what type it is and the broncoscopy will confirm that xxx
