Lung cancer

Hi I'm 65 yrs old I'm due for surgery in mid Feb and absolutely terrified.  I try to remain positive but when alone I'm crumbling inside.  I do consider myself extremely lucky that they can remove it and tell myself I'm better off than most as it's stage one and found early.  I'm an ex smoker who gave up  I had a few chest xrays due to an ongoing lung infection in 2024 that didn't clear until March 2025, three different antibiotics later. Final xray picked up a 17mm nodule with gg. appearance PET scan showed hotspots in colon and throat  thankfully throat was reflux and polyps in my colon with one being precancerous after investigation.  My surgeon told me my lung cancer is slow growing and thinks I've probably had it for about 4 yrs! Just glad it was spotted when it was, I think they only found it because I'd given up cigs and my lungs had cleared enough for them to spot it.  Just wondering if my facial skin rash is connected to the lung cancer as I've had regular flare ups of dry itchy skin for the last four years too.  Anyone have any tips, docs just keep giving me different creams to try which stop working after a while. Much love to all.

  • Hi' Jilly, Yes we all know too well the concern you must be going through. If it's any comfort I had my lung surgery in October 03, just a little over a year now. This was following an 80mm bowel one in 03. I can honestly say I'm feeling quite normal with myself now and go about my life as usual.. There's no reason why you shouldn't be the same. Keep us up to speed with your progress we are hear to support each other we know what it's like.

  • Hello,

I had surgery 3.5 years ago at the age of 70. I was looked after very well by the whole team. I had the top fight lobe removed by robotics assisted surgery. I was up and about later in the morning of my surgery and went home after a week. I had a mild infection but that was soon cleared up.

They will do everything they can to help you through. My family bought me in some fruity sweets as the anaesthetic taste was rather metallic. If you want to ask any questions just go ahead.

  • Hi, thank you for your reply, 80mm gosh that sounds enormous and here i am worried about a little 17mm.  I have my pre- op on Fri and will keep you informed of progress. So glad you're ok, its the happy outcomes I read about that help with keeping a positive attitude. Thanks so much for your support x

  • Hi  goodness me, so glad you are now well, my surgeon has said it will be key hole surgery. I'm sure I'll be fine but there's always a nagging doubt as any surgery has risks, cannot wait for it all to be done even though I'm scared and getting anxious. I have my pre-op on fri hopefully I'll be ok once I'm better informed about the procedure.  Thank you for your reply and sharing your experience x

  • Hello Jillythekid (I like the name).

Facing lung cancer surgery is indeed frightening but be assured it does offer the best chance for a complete cure.

I had open surgery in 2014, at stage T2AN1M0, which involved complete removal of my right lung. In my case I had optional follow up chemo just to increase my long term survival chances due to mine being more advanced, but at stage 1 you'll escape this. Fortunately it has worked for me so far, some 11.5 years without further problems.

I didn't have a rash myself but I have seen some in a similar situation a couple of times over the years.

Follow all exercises and other advice given to you post surgery and you'll be just fine.

    All the best,

    Derek.

  • I was only in three days

  • Hi Derek. Thank you for your reply. My gosh you've been through so much, happy you are doing well and not had any reoccurrence. thank you for your reassuring words of advice. I am hopeful that I won't need any further treatment. X

  • Wow that's not very long at all, they've told me my stay could be up to 7 days depending on how fit I am before surgery  will depend on how well I recover (assuming surgery goes well) and there's no reason it shouldn't, so I'm off to get a little exercise now.  Stay well. X

  • Wishing you well with your surgery.  I had my top right lobe removed in 2017, and at the pre-op planning meeting my surgeon told me he wanted me to walk a mile a day.  Exercise is not my thing, but I did it, and I'm sure it helped me recover.  I was in hospital 9 days, but only because (unknown to me, no-one told me...and somehoe I didn't notice because I was looked after so nicely!) I had Hospital acquired pneumonia.   Best wishes to you!

  • Yes 80mm even the Surgeon commented "it's a big one".

When I went in for my lung one, I had the surgery on the Monday they took the drain pipe out on the Tuesday and sent me home on the Wednesday. I cheated a little. On the Tuesday night the nurse asked if I'd had a bowel movement because I can't go home unless I had. On The Wednesday when the Consultant came he asked have you had a bowel movement. I said yes this morning. Right he said you can go home. I'd fibbed, I wasn't for staying just because I hadn't had a poo, so home I went.
