My husband has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and they think it is secondary but have not found the primary yet, awaiting PET scan next week. My question is… he had to have 5.3 Ltrs drained from his lung. The drain has been removed and a lump has appeared around the wound which has become infected, on antibiotics and being packed with a dressing to stop it weeping.  He is in some pain in his back, struggling to eat and take medication is this normal? Can you recommend any type of supplement drink to get some nutrition into him? Is it bette to purchase or make one myself? Any comments much appreciated. Thank you

  • I'm sorry to hear about your husband's recent diagnosis.  How worrying for you, and lovely that you're looking for ways to tempt him to eat a little more.  How about lovely nutritious home-made soups, for flavour and nutrition some meat, stock made from chicken carcass or marrow bone, a slice of bacon, etc and add blended cooked root and green veg (sweet potato, butternut squash, white potato with the skins on, carrot, parsnip, leek, cauliflower especially the leaves, onions and herbs eg parsley, rosemary, add stock-powder for taste if needed - you can make a big batch and freeze into small tempting meals to warm up later and add extra water to preferred consistency. Serve with buttered fresh  whole-wheat/seed bread with the crusts cut off, or lovely soft white rolls or baguettes, to tempt a flagging appetite.  Better than these commercially manufactured powders made from skim milk and chemicals to which you add to milk (potentially allergenic to people sensitive to bovine proteins). Best to your husband.

  •  I had my second one in my lung in 04. The primary one was in my bowel and had it removed in 03. I've been fine since and more or less my normal self. I'm guessing he's struggling to eat or take his medication because of the pain, but things should ease off with a little time. You can't have surgery without pain unfortunately.

You should have a cancer support nurse for you to contact with your queries.
