A  small nodule was found on my right lung and the biopsy result came back that it was cancer but at the early stage. It was a shock to the system. I’ve never smoked, kept myself relatively fit with my sporting activities and a healthy diet. According to dr could be other factors contributed to  Not going into that.  I’m to have keyhole surgery and I’m terrified. Has anyone had a similar diagnosis and undergone this procedure?

  • Hello Orchid, welcome but I'm very sorry you have found the need to join.

It is indeed a great shock and terrifying to be diagnosed but you do have the advantage of being early stage and being offered surgery. I too was able to have surgery and was also terrified, I needed open surgery and the whole right lung was removed. I'd never even been in hospital before but can tell you that, although it wasn't the best experience in my life, it was also nothing like as bad as I had feared and you'll be looked after very well. You should be able to recover well and quickly with keyhole.

The good news is that surgery offers an excellent chance of a cure, helped by also being early stage. I was diagnosed at stage 2A and I had my operation just over 11 years ago now with fortunately no further lung cancer issues since.

You'll be just fine and I wish you all the best for successful treatment and a cure.

  • Thank you for this. I’m in much the same situation as Orchid, and I’m getting over the shock of a nodule discovered in 2022 turning cancerous, and now an operation planned mid-October to remove half my left lung (robotic surgery…) I confess I am terrified. But your post has calmed me somewhat. I am going to stop googling recurrence rates and life expectancy. Thank you

  • Good idea, stay off google as it's usually way out of date and unreliable, you really can't differentiate between current and out of date information and it can therefore scare you witless.

I'm sure you'll be just fine and hope all goes well for you. Just remember to follow all the advice your medical team will give you for the recovery phase when you go home after the op.

  • Thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply - wide awake in the early hours everything seems so terrifying, and your words are of great comfort.
