I have been diagnosed with lung cancer and a biopsy was considered too high risk. The treatment i have just completed was a course of intense radiotherapy SABRE consisting of 8 sessions over two weeks. I have just completed this and now waiting to hear what happens next.
Hi
My mum has just finished radiotherapy and has an appointment with the oncologist end of May to see if it's worked. I expected another scan before, but apparently they scan every time they give radio, so can see the size change etc.
good luck
Hello
I had the same treatment as you in December 2023, SABR over two and a half weeks with 8 sessions in all, finishing on the 15 December 2023.
You will have a CT scan with contrast, which is usually three months after your treatment finishing, and then a follow up outpatient appointment to see an Oncologist a few weeks later to discuss the results. If all is well and the lesion is responding well to the radiotherapy, you will probably be put on six monthly CT scans and follow ups. I was told by the cancer nurse not to be too disappointed at the first follow up because the images in the lung will not be clear enough because of the radiotherapy which can cause inflammation and scar tissue. I had a quick response to the radiotherapy and the first three month follow up showed an almost 50% shrinkage.
Radiotherapy is not a quick fix, this is because it carries on working in the body long after the treatment finishes, and cancer cells can take many months to die off. SABR is a very effective treatment and is thought by many Oncologists, my Oncologist included, that it is just as effective as surgery. I was told this by my Oncologist because I refused surgery and just opted for SABR.
I had my third CT scan and follow up recently (end of March), and, apart from scar tissue, all is looking positive. There has been no activity in the lesion in 12 months, which brought the radiologists and the oncologist to assume what is left that they can see may be dead cancer cells. I now don't have to be seen until September.
Best wishes to you.
Ann
