Hi everyone, I'm new to the group having been diagnosed recently with a non cancerous tumour. After numerous tests I now have a date to go into hospital to have part of my lung and the tumour removed. This has been a massive shock to me and I am very scared of what to expect. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi   welcome to the group, but sorry to hear your news. This isn’t a procedure I have personal knowledge of, but whilst you wait for someone to come and chat to you about this, I thought I would share a recent post with you, where there are a couple of people who are also waiting to have this procedure. I’ll pop a link below in case you haven’t seen it already.

  • Hello Rosebud

    72 year old male.

Thought you might like to know about my experience as I had a 30mm cancer removed from mt right lung, they also removed 30% of the lung and lymph nodes 3 years ago, at the time I decided it was best not to ask questions about the procedure incase it was too alarming, anyway I didn't have a choice in having the op because without removal I would surly die, looking back I should have asked because I think I would have been assured it would be OK although I'm not sure I would have believed them anyway.

I am happy to give you any information you need and will be truthful but I can tell you with out doubt it's not as bad as as you're probably thinking.

My operation took 3h.30mins stay in hospital 8 days, you will be hooked up to a Morphine drip and also have access to a button which you have control so if you feel any pain you press the button for an extra shot of Morphine you might be interested to know I only used it twice and it worked within about 5 seconds "Brilliant" so throughout my stay in hospital pain control wasn't an issue at all. I was fitted with a drain from my lung which was a bloody nuance as I had to carry a bag around with me containing the discharge for about 2 weeks. I attended a day center for it's removal,  what a amazing experience that was! My brother in law came with me and the doctor sat me down and I had to practice a long breath out as it was important I did not inhale throughout the removal  procedure, the doctor slowly pulling the pipe out from my lung, what a strange feeling and amazing as you would think you would need a local anesthetic or something but I was given nothing, it was completely painless but I could feel the pipe moving from the center of by chest (very odd feeling) so I asked the doctor how far the pipe was in my body and was told about 12 inches at which point my brother in law went very white and had to sit down Slight smile  on the other hand was completely at ease with the procedure. Finally it took me about 4 months to recover to full time work, not a quick fix I'm afraid.

Hope I haven't given too much info let me know if you need further help. The bottom line is "IT'S NOT THAT BAD".

  • Hello Iamover50

Thank you for your kind words, they have helped a bit Slight smile, I have my pre-op tomorrow, so should have some answers, if I remember to ask the questions i'm writing down. This has all happened out of the blue and quite quickly, I only went to doctors for some advice on general aches and pains. wasn't expecting this Frowning2.

Hope your recovery is ongoing and your future bright.
