Hi there. Just wanted to get some views on my situation if possible. After a CT scan got asked to go to hospital to see a consultant. So it appears there was an indication on the scan that needed further investigation, so was sent for a PET-CT scan and lung health check.
After getting the above done, back to see the consultant who said it’s all indicative of lung cancer. He then told me that this would need an operation to remove this. He was then going to discuss with MDT next day to progress. However, next call was to say that the surgery consultant would want a biopsy done first before any operation, in case this isn’t cancer.
So I’m slightly confused now by this turn of events and would like to ask if this kind of change of plan is usual/normal and I may not have cancer after all? Sorry for the long ramble but just want to get this stuff clear in my head. Thanks for any help.
My husband is going through diagnostic tests and the biopsy by an endoscopy was always on the plan. I understood this was to diagnose what type of tumour it is as he has already been told it is a tumour. In your case it may be to double check. Others on here will know more than me I am sure.
Hello badwolf,
A biopsy is usually normal practice in the diagnostic process before treatment.
Your consultant (possibly a respiratory consultant?) has already said tests so far are indicative of lung cancer and from the scans it looks like surgery will be the best treatment. At that point the surgeon would get involved and will usually require further tests including a biopsy and often others such as lung function tests (exercises and breathing tests). As Aria1 says, they will want to identify the type of tumour before proceeding.
I hope all goes well for you and surgery can be completed, this is the best option for successful treatment - mine was just over 10 years ago and it has worked so far.
Any other questions just ask.
Derek.
Hi badwolf
I had similar. I was picked up with suspect lung nodules after my first year check of bowel cancer monitoring
I was booked for biopsy and luckily my hubby refused to leave me as I was ushered in to a choice of Operation, radiotherapy or watch and wait.
I was shocked
I went for the operation and it was successful!
I hope that you have a treatment plan explained as it’s very confusing
I’ll be hoping you have some positive news
Best wishes
Ann
Hi it seems a biopsy first is seen as gold standard - my ct guided biopsy failed so am now booked for a wedge resection next week where they will remove two nodules if they can; so they have combined the biopsy with the operation to remove as much as they can at the same time which i am happy about. However any other treatment has been delayed for four months until they get the pathology to confirm both cancer and type of cancer; i am less happy about the delay
