Scared lung cancer diagnosis

Hi, I have had a nodule on my lung for about a year now, which I was told to keep an eye on. I was hue a ct in June but was not called in for an appointment so I had a private one done as I had lung infection. It came back suspicious so back to nhs another ct with contrast and pet scan they think cancer. Waiting for appointment for biopsy, I have a pain in my side which no consultant has really said anything about, she did examine me before pet scan and said ok she could find nothing, I have been looking at Dr Google and frightened myself silly, I can’t eat or sleep and have been prescribed diazepam can anyone tell me about pain in upper back please Tia

  • Hi, sorry to hear your news. Rule one...leave Dr Google alone, reading mis-information can play havoc with your mental health. Until you have all the tests and the biopsy, then the planning for treatment can begin. Most people, myself included, found that once their treatment began they felt better because something positive was happening.

I know it's hard, but personally I would not go down the "Diazepam" route, these prescription drugs can be addictive. When I was first diagnosed and before all investigations started I could not sleep, but I found keeping busy and doing a hobby helped to calm my mind. I would be sitting in the armchair in the early hours reading, knitting or crocheting, anything to keep my mind off things. Keep active during the day, this will help with your sleeping.f

Regarding your upper back pain, I didn't have that, but I'm sure someone on here will have experienced similar and will join in with this thread.

    Best wishes.

  • Thank you, I have a 10 week old puppy which I had put a deposit down on before all this happened. I was in 2 minds weather to bring him home but the breeder said she would take him back if things got too bad so for the moment I have a distraction but another worry. I have biopsy booked for Thursday so perhaps I am nearer to some answers,

    Thank you

    best wishes

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here. I know how scary all this is for you, but  is right, please keep away from google. The internet is so outdated when it comes to lung cancer and treatment, and new treatments are becoming available all the time.

I hope the biopsy went well for you, There will be an agonising wait now for those results, unfortunately this can take up to 14 days as they test the samples to see if cells grow etc.

I think the puppy is a very good idea. I got my puppy a year or so after my diagnoses, she is 9 this year. Not only is she my emotional support, no one loves you like a dog does, and it gives you that purpose to get up and get going even when you don't feel like it. And believe me there will be days when you don't feel like it, but just a 10 minute walk around the block with the dog can do wonders.

  • Thank you for your lovely reply, I have had the biopsy and pet scan, the per scan says it has spread waiting for biopsy results but have seen cancer nurse who was super, not sure how but treatments will be available, I’m sure a long hard road in front, but feel like I can stay active and on top of things for my pup so definitely staying, thanks for your kind words of encouragement x

  • Bless you , sorry to hear your news. Most definitely Dr google is all doom and gloom . And you should keep your distance . As for your  Biopsy  it vary it can be quick or slow for resaults  depending the area you live and the hospital . Which unfortunately is unfair.  I really wish you all the best .  Take care  xx
