Is it common for a chemo cycle to be delayed due to low white blood cell count? Do you think a 7 day delay matters a lot? Also, is it ok to go for a ct scan with dye directly after chemo treatment? Thanks

  • Hi my partners chemo was delayed for 7 days for the same thing he now has injections 5 days after chemo 1 for 4days to keep his levels up . As for the CT I'm not sure my partner has got his 8 days after hope this helps

  • Thank you Lindy1, for reassuring me that I’m not the only one. Blush

  • Hi Verbena

It is common: I had two cycles of chemo delayed due to low white and red blood counts. Each cycle was delayed for a week.  The delays did not impact on my outcomes.  If it happens again, ask for the injections that help to boost your bone marrow production, which will help to raise your white cell count.  I had two courses of these injections, which I chose to  administer  myself (they go into fatty tissue such as thighs, tummy etc and are easy to do).

Please try not to over think everything and trust your cancer team regarding CT Scans etc. They are working hard to do the very best for you.

I hope the next cycle of chemo goes well.

  • Thank you Kegsy. You’re right. I mustn’t panic at each hiccup. This would have been my 3rd. I’ll bear in mind the injections you mentioned too. Thanks Blush

  • Not sure about your question, but you do need a blood test before you have a CT scan with contrast. People over 65 have to have a kidney function test too.   I suppose most people just expect the Dr to know whats best in any individual patients case . But we are all different.  Hope someone can help with your question.

  • Hi Verbena.

My WBC fell dramatically after my first chemo. They decided to go ahead with second session but .. like Kegsy.. gave me injections (Filgrastim) to do at home fir several days in between each treatment. These brought levels up high enough to be able to carry on without delays.

Hope things work out well for you.

  • Thanks Baytree123. It’s reassuring that there’s a solution to the low count.BlushI hope you’re doing well.
