Hi guys,
My uncle (61yrs) was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this month and somehow it's already spread to his thyroid gland, lymph nodes and femur - And we have yet to discuss possible treatments with the oncologist. On top of that my uncle has two NHS numbers and so the GP can't help with his cancer support because the hospital is using the other NHS number.
He had a stroke last year, so his cognitive impairment has declined rapidly and to be honest he is already showing signs of on set dementia which needs to be investigated. He called me just this Friday to tell me he had cancer when we were already informed of this 3 weeks ago. He asked me on Sunday during a hospital appointment if he could take a pill to get rid of the tumor. It breaks my heart. I feel as though I am constantly have to remind him that he has cancer. I feel like a terrible human. Others are saying to not remind him, that if he says he just has a bad cough or swollen leg that I should agree. But then he asks me to book appointments at the GP for symptoms we know are being caused by cancer so surely I have to remind him... Right?
I'm at a miss, what am I supposed to do or say?
I know I shouldn't be complaining, I almost feel embarrassed for ranting on this blog... I'm not the one who is sick. I know others are going through worse. But my God I don't know what to do anymore.
I wish you all good health and peace.
Hi SOFIA97 welcome to the group but sorry to hear about your uncle, he has a lot going on, it must be very difficult for you both.
I don’t know how he would of ended up with 2 NHS numbers, but the GP would still have a duty of care for him, I would write to the practice manager explaining the issue and ask how this can be resolved.
The macmillan online community is split into different support groups, and I wonder if you will also find support from the Carers only forum and the Family and friends forum where you may be able to connect with other people who are in a similar situation to yourself.
You can also call the macmillan support line who are available 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm on 0808 808 00 00.
Wishing your uncle all the very best.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
