Hi

The shadow on his lung was found by change, he is currently asymptomatic but is unable to be treated due to his ill health. We were all initially terrified but feel better because the consultant has reassured my dad that the tumor is slow growing. He has opted to not be told his life expectancy so although we are relieved that he is feeling happier, are worried feeling very much in limbo about his health.

  • Hi Maggie100 welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your dad. It is good to hear that he is symptom free at the moment, and I hope that continues for him. The thing with being told a life expectancy is, that is all you can think of.  I think your dad is doing the right thing by not knowing, but of course this is always a personal decision. Very often, with any type of cancer, it is the treatment that makes you so unwell, especially with chemotherapy, and as dad is not having treatment, he should stay very well for some time.

This is going to be very hard for you all, but the best thing for dad is if you can all try and carry on as before. I know how difficult this will be, as someone who has an incurable cancer myself, there are times when I wish people didn’t know.

Please do come and chat here, and you may also want to join the Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum where you can connect with other people in a similar situation to yourself. You can also call the Macmillan support line any day between 8am and 8pm on 0808 808 00 00.

Wishing you and dad all the very best.

  • Dear Chelle

Thank you so much for your advice, we will try and carry on as usual. Somehow it is better now that we know what we are dealing with so can come to terms with it.

    Best wishes and thanks again
