Recent Blood Test

Hi everyone,

  1. I have just recently had a blood test at my local surgery and the doctor told he found a shadow on my lung besides other things like a swollen liver, vitamin B12 deficiency, prediabetes and a couple of other things. I didn't actually know that a blood test could spot these type of things, but obviously it did. I have been feeling fine recently until just before Christmas when I got pneumonia, which lasted for about 3 weeks, with all the typical symptoms. But in the last week or so I have had started to get sharp pains on the left side of my chest (especially at the side under my arm), headaches, and pins and needles / numbness in my arm and fingers. So, I definitely think I have lung cancer due to the shadow found on my lung. I have an appointment booked for Friday at my local hospital for a chest x-ray, but I am obviously very anxious (not slept for days). Just looking for advice from anyone who has been through similar.
  2. Thank you ... John.

P.S. I was a smoker years ago, but now use a vape.

  • Hi  did you have an X-ray when they diagnosed you with pneumonia? The only way to show you have a shadow on the lung is either by X-ray or Ct scan, so try not to worry until you have had your X-ray on Friday.

  • Hi Chelle,

Thank you very much for your reply. No the doctor did not X-ray me when he diagnosed the pneumonia. He only mentioned the shadow after the blood test, but he do a manual check of my body (listened to my heart etc.) before the blood test.

    Best wishes ... John.

  • P.S. Doesn't a blood test bring up markers? I did think it was a bit strange when he mentioned the shadow on my lung without actually seeing it.

  • I know blood tests can bring up lots of different things, but you need to “see” a shadow. I myself had lots of blood tests before I was diagnosed, all were normal, it was an X-ray that showed the tumour.

Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Hi John,

I was under haematology for 12 months as my white blood cell count was massively high. I was signed off buy doctors until March this year. It was the fact I had pneumonia and 2 xrays then a ct scan that my lung cancer was found. I don't understand how the doctor can say there is a shadow on your lung without actually seeing one, a blood test won't tell him that.

  • Hi Rubyj28,

    • Thank you for your reply. Yes, I did think it was very strange when my doctor mentioned this. My first thought was, how could he tell? He also asked me questions about my liver, because he said my blood test results showed that my liver was swollen (he put this down to me being over weight). All very strange without an X-Ray!
