What to expect

Hello to the group. My husband was told he had stage 4 lung cancer in October this year and that it had already spread to several other areas and there was no cure. Chemotherapy was discussed but we were told it could make him feel worse. He made the decision then not to have the chemo.

We were told that without the chemo his life expectancy was about 3 months. That 3 months is almost up now and he is very ill and in a lot of pain in his back although the morphine liquid helps. What I would like to know is what to expect in the time he has left. I'd just like to know what I might have to cope with and would appreciate any advice.

We do have regular visits from the district nurses. The doctor calls us regularly too but I would like to hear from anyone who is or has cared for someone with terminal lung cancer . Thank you

  • Hi Pudgit

So very sorry that you and your husband are facing this.

Do you have a hospice nearby that you could ring or even pop in for a chat?  The staff will be well versed in dealing with end of life situations and will be able to provide you with some very practical knowledge/advice as well as giving you someone to talk to.

In this day and age, no-one should be in pain at the end of their life, so please let the District Nurse/Doctor know about his level of pain.

  • So sorry to hear about your husband.  There is a "Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum" on here that you could join.  It is specifically for people in situations like yourself.  You will find a lot of support and information from people who are caring for someone in the same situation as your husband.  Just click on the 'search' icon at the top of the page.  Also at the top of the page in the green bar is "Cancer information and Support".

    Best wishes, Ann
