Good morning ,
My mum has newly been diagnosed with Lung cancer , still undergoing more tests , a 2nd Bronchoscopy and further scans and Adrenal Contrast and Head scan. There is talk of an operation to remove her Right Lung.
This feels very scary , and my question is has anyone had this surgery, and what is the recovery and outcome ?
Much Love
xx
Hello Loki Lad, I'm very sorry to hear of your mum's diagnosis.
I had my right lung removed in 2014. It does feel very scary at first, I was petified but it wasn't anything like as bad as I anticipated. There should be more tests before a final decision is taken to make sure that your mum is fit enough, these will no doubt vary but mine included a lung fuction test (blowing/breathing into a tube to measure flow), a walking test (up and down a corridor measuring laps over a set time) and a heart ultrasound which are all non-invasive and straightforward. Other procedures might also be necessary but the surgeon will go through these if necessary.
I had the operation on Tuesday and was home on Sunday. I was given painkillers at first plus excercises by a physio and told to walk gradually building up distance. It feels difficult at first but soon improves if you follow what you're advised to do.
There is oviously some effect on breathing as the some lung capacity is lost but I hardly notice it and it certainly isn't life changing in a way that people imagine and you soon get used to it. I find it hardly limits everyday activities at all and can still play a full round of golf as often as I like, although I don't run around the course!
Surgery most definitely gives the best chance of long term survival. I'm approaching the 9 year anniversary of surgery in a couple of weeks time and am very grateful for the opportunity I had for surgery. I wish your mum all the best for a successful outcome and if you want to ask anything more I'll do my best to answer.
Derek.
Thank you so much for your reply Derek. And all the best to you. And it just shows how good it is to talk to someone in a similar situation, as everyone needs a positive in their life.
Mum is still awaiting her scan results and her Bronchoscopy is Friday, so we still have a way to go to get to the treatment stage.
thank you again
