Hi I’m new to the group.my scans have revealed a 14mm nodule on lower left lung.my clinician is recommending biopsy whereas I would like to wait and see. Any comments please.

  • Hi Lubie welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here. With all cancers early diagnoses is key to a cure, so I personally wouldn’t wait a minute and get a biopsy done!

  • Hi Lubie

Ive had bowel and lung cancer both were primaries and both I wanted it in the bin asap

The lung they did give me three options. I wanted surgery which in the end they did so didn’t have a biopsy

My lung cancer was small and picked up by my bowel scan

    Good luck

  • I remember feeling the same way.  Because I'd just completed chemotherapy for a different cancer, we knew from the PET scans that my lung mass was likely low grade and early stage, even though it was larger than yours.

My team wanted a biopsy so they could determine the options.  "Wait and see" was an option, but there was a good chance we'd be at the same or a worse point when a repeat scan was done in 3 months.  I had the biopsy, which confirmed that my lung cancer was low grade and early stage.  I opted for SBRT over surgery at that point (I've since had surgery following a presumed recurrence).

One thing I asked my team at every stage was whether I would lose any options if I took a given path.  It's hard for them to answer that question without knowing the specific type of lung cancer they're dealing with.

A middle ground might be to ask for a PET scan, which will provide information about the activity of the nodule.  My team did this when they were suspicious of a recurrence but didn't want to do a biopsy.

  • Thanks, but already had the pet xcan, and the biopsy. Unfortunately it is stage 4 primary lung cancer. That had already spread. To my liver, my womb,  my lymph nodes and now the brain.  But until t had a minor problem re the womb I had no symptoms.  From day 1 I was told it was terminal and given max of 12 months with treatment, thankfully I have surpassed that.  I have now been told a max  of 6 months with more chemo to slow the process  down.  It is a horrid disease with horrid treatment options. And at times it is hard to get my head around, particularly as I am an avid non smoker, and struggle to understand why. Or what I could have done to minimise the risk.  But I guess that's life. Xx

  • I was given the wait and see option back in Jan 23 Although they tried to override that option with a biopsy which I declined. I’ve had the 3 month scan and there has been very little activity or growth. My team are suggesting biopsy again. However I want to wait and see. The lung area is a very sterile area and  I do not want an invasive biopsy until it is absolutely necessary.

  • I am sorry you have had to endure this evil illness. I recognise that your situation was different to mine and I pray my nodule is benign. I can’t let them go in with the biopsy until I am confidentPrayt’s the only optionPray

  • Yes I’ve had the second scan and there is no activity from 3 months ago. Which is why I am refusing the biopsy and wanting the wait and see option.

  • I do not want an invasive biopsy until it is absolutely necessary.

What would have to change for you to regard a biopsy as absolutely necessary?

  • As I said I would  like to see if any activity comes up on scan like growth. There has been no change since jan 23 so I want to continue to wait and see.

  • Rather you than me I wouldn't want to take that chance ,never, no disrespect but iv had 1 lobe of right lung removal and  then a wedge resection in another lobe in right lung.i have a nodule in left lung now it's only 5mm and hope it stays that size , but if it's grew any at all I'd like to make decision there and then and not hang about ..,
