Hello,
My father was hospitalised with double vision four weeks ago and subsequent investigations identified very low sodium levels. Further scans then identified lung cancer. He came home on Friday and the time in hospital has been very debilitating. He's 82 years old but walked in to A&E and is now struggling with any mobility at all.
My mother is very capable and a little younger but is really struggling with his lack of appetite. He's been losing weight for a while but this sped up during his time in hospital. Now he is home, my mother is trying to get him to eat and whilst he is trying he just isn't hungry. Dieticians gave him Ensure drinks in hospital to try and get calories into him and we have continued that at home.
We have his first outpatient appointment tomorrow and whilst I am not expecting miracles, any tips around getting calories in would be appreciated.
His stay in hospital was on a gastro ward and whilst everyone there did their best, they are not experts on his issues and I wondered if anyone had similar experiences.
Best wishes to you all.
I feel that when I have been off food I am tempted by very small amounts. After my LAR I ate small steam puddings with cream, a fresh cream cake basically anything I fancied. Once I felt stronger I liked fish finger sandwiches mayo butter on white. This sounds so unhealthy now but at the time it’s what I needed as I had to have high salt and sugar as I had an Ileostomy
If you can tempt him with his favourite meal. Or maybe a bacon sandwich or a small fish chips just to get him going.
The mistake I found people did without realising it was give me a normal sized portion
It put me off
Little and often
I wish you well
Ann
Hi Chris
Artsie is correct now is not the time to be worrying about healthy eating, the focus needs to be on high calorific food stuff on a little and often basis. Cake, chocolate and full fat dairy are a good start e,g add grated cheese to any hot item such as mashed potato, soups etc. My saviour when I had problems swallowing during radiotherapy was bowls of baked egg custard (eggs, cream, sugar); easy to make, easy to eat and a large bowl will keep in the fridge for a couple of days. The trick is to have food items on hand should he fancy something to eat or just nibble on; a large (and open) tin of the small wrapped chocolates such as Roses, biscuits with each drink. His body needs to re-establish the habit of eating/snacking.
Once his eating improves, his mobility issues can be improved.
Hope this helps a bit.
