NSCLC treated with radiotherapy rather than surgery

Hello and apologies if I’ve asked this question before. After 18 months of watching lung lesions, CT and Pet Scans and 2 bronchoscopies I was told I had numerous nodules, mostly cut glass but 3 were concerning as over the 18 months they’d grown.

I was scheduled for rt upper lobectomy surgery last December which had to be cancelled at the last minute. Following another CT scan and a consultation with the surgeon he recommended removing the whole of my rt lung and mentioned I could have future problems with my left lung which had small nodules.

I was shaken up by the thought of the surgery and radiotherapy was also proposed as a treatment. A GP friend came with me to the consultation and she advised me not to go ahead with the surgery. I felt the same way and have completed radiotherapy in mid March. I now have to wait until mid June for a CT SCAN to find out if the radiotherapy has worked.

My question is - has anyone else opted for rt as opposed to radical surgery and if so how did it work out for you? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer

  • Hi  welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here. I have had radiotherapy, but surgery wasn’t an option for me. I wish it had of been, I hate the thought of the tumours still being there, and we are always told that surgery is the best option for a cure.

I can understand the thought of surgery being daunting, but I think we have to trust our oncologists as they are the experts. There are a few posts on here from people who have had lung removal, but hopefully someone will be along soon to share their experience with you.

  • Hi Chelle and thanks so much for your reply. I understand that most people would want the tumours removed but I visit my daughter and family in Australia once a year and I was worried I may never be able to fly long haul again due to breathlessness from the surgery. I’ll have to wait for the results of the scan in June / July to see if the rt has blasted the darn tumours. I’ve recovered from the rt quite well. There is a slim possibility of surgery if the rt hasn’t sufficiently worked.

Hoping someone will respond who’s had the same experience as me but thanks once more and I hope you’re doing well.

  • I had surgery bottom right lobectomy and top segment so it’s minor up to your proposed op

There’s lots of lesions which bothers me.

I was told it’s the gold star treatment well I’m breathless all of the time and have a wracking cough. I tire and don’t feel I have any energy. I’m not one for regrets however I’m very close to wishing I’d stayed away from the op and had SABR

I wouldn’t have it again! Even with clear margins I’ve had three years of bowel cancer an Ileostomy then reversed now lung. I want a break from all of it

It may reassure you to know that not all surgeries are a quick fix.
The lung taken is missed and yours would be much more to cope with

    Good luck with you results
