Hi
I’ve just joined today and this is my first post .
This is the beginning of our journey with lung cancer of my husband
It started almost 5 weeks ago . My husband was feeling unwell one night complaining of pains in his right leg and arms . Then pain in his shoulders, back and neck . Basically it kept moving.
The day after we visited a&e ad we were concerned he was having some kind of stroke. Bloods taken , nothing and sent home . He took ibuprofen and paracetamol and slept the night . Day after , moveable pains again , another trip to a&e and they prescribed painkillers . Doctor’s following day who took bloods and prescribed nerve tablets. Appointment made with neuropathy department. He also said go to X-ray department and have a chest X-ray which he did . The pains have subsided But he still has Irvin his right leg and his left arm is very weak to the extent he struggles performing every day tasks such as rowing his shoe laces and can’t drive etc .
Two days later , he got a call for an urgent ct scan as chest X-ray showed 2 areas uncertain about .
ct scan picked up shadows on both lungs . Consultant appointment followed and my husband was told he most probably has lung cancer . Not 100% confirmed as he said only a biopsy could confirm but looking at the scans, it was most probable.
pet scan was 4 days ago and an mri on his brain is Monday as the gp also says he has 2 blood clots in his head . I’m now thinking are they blood clots or metastases ?
His appetite is ok and although he’s lost a bit of weight , there are no other obvious symptoms .
From the original symptoms of pain all over and thinking he was having a stroke or heart attack to being told it’s possible cancer had knocked us for six .
Sorry for the long post . Just wanted ti try explain the unusual way my husband been diagnosed and what should we expect next ?
The consultant says they will have an mdt meeting Tuesday and discuss a biopsy etc and then I suppose it will be staged once pet scan results /mri of brain are all done etc .
Thank you for listening
Sharon
I'm sorry you find yourself here.
Your husband's path to diagnosis isn't uncommon. Lung cancer is often diagnosed incidentally in the course of investigations for something else. My own lung cancer was discovered during imaging for another cancer (I'm in that lucky group who had two different primary cancers at the same time).
You are correct in assuming that more tests lie ahead. The results of those will inform both the diagnosis and the treatment plan. Try not to assume too much in the meantime. The MDT's interpretation of the imaging results is far more important than your GP's.
What happens next depends an awful lot on what the combined test results show. How treatment decisions are made can be complicated but it's good to know the MDT will be considering your husband's case so soon.
I know it's really hard, but try not to look too far ahead at the moment. Wait until the MDT meets and then deal with things one at a time.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
