Hello, I’m new to the group. I’m 8 weeks post op after a right lung lobectomy, I’ve developed a dry cough and I’m wondering if this is common

  • Hi JNP

Me too and it is driving me NUTS!

If I go out anywhere and enter a different environment the change in atmosphere makes me cough and I get a death glare from all. One way to clear a queue is stick me in it. Everyone looks at me with that COVID spreader look

    Sorry for the moan

I can empathise with you. My doctor didn’t seem worried about it at my follow up

Im trying an exercise thing called ultra breathe. It’s the first day so I’ll keep you posted as to if it’s helpful

    best wishes

  • Thank you Ann. I hope the ultra breathe helps you.

  • i did have a cough after a lobectomy but only for about 2 weeks ,and then no more talk to your doctor

  • I’m still coughing and my lobectomy was 12 months ago. Wondering if anyone has had a long term cough? I didn’t cough at all after initial surgery. Developed a cough a few weeks after, that they put down to a tiny amount of normal post-op fluid. My Onc says it’s scar tissue that’s making me cough now but I always worry about recurrence Pensive

  • I’d be interested to know more about ultra breathe please, Ann xx

  • Hi Poppykatkat

I was exactly the same no cough in hospital about two weeks later it started

But I suffer with fatigue especially lower half which is more likely to be lack oxygen. well that’s why I’m trying to improve my lung function

Will let you know how it goes. So far so good. Twas only ten pounds so worth a go.

  • Ahhh it’s a thing you breathe into! I just googled it. Never heard of this before. Might give it a go as my lung feels quite restricted when I take a deep breath, like a band is around my chest. It has a dull ache too sometimes and can set my cough off!

  • Hi Poppykatkat

I hadn’t heard of it either. I researched a lot of different things and bought my self a small portable nebuliser which helped me in the early days.
I thought of getting a spirometer but this interested me more as it’s used by gym members and elderly  I didn’t want to push it

Also it’s very easy to start and you can level it up easily.

    Best wishes

  • Hi JNP

Im seven weeks and wondered if there’s a connection in which lobes removed.
My sis in law had top right and no cough though more pain

Mine was bottom right lobe removed and a segment from top

Be interesting to find out if the coughs more common with patients with same site removed

May I ask which lobe you had removed?

  • Hi, I had an upper right lobectomy last May 22nd. I have a wheezy cough that I didn’t have before although it improves when I’ve taken some exercise. Like Poppycat, I feel a tight band across my right side at the front. Apparently this is quite common and it’s a result of nerve damage. I’ve grown used to it but I find wearing a bra a bit of a trial.

I have another scan next month and appointment with the chest clinic in June. I’ll ask about the mucus then. Maybe they can refer me to physio for some clearing exercises as I want to avoid medication, if possible. I just hope it’s clear again.

    love Daisychain xx
