Lobe removal ?

Hello, this might sound as though I'm not grateful, but I absolutely am.

I'm on my 7th week of recovering from a lobectomy, and had a tumour removed TC-1 .

Have seen the surgeon and Macmillan nurse who have informed me that I'm cancer free, it was removed. However I now have to make a decision, leave it and they will keep an eye on it , or take the top lobe of my left lung out as a precaution.

I'm in such a dilemma, and it's so easy for people to say I'd have it out when they havent been through it.

Has anyone on here had the same situation Thinking .

They have said there's no need to rush , but go back on 11th May with my answer...which I don't have yet .

  • Hi 6363

WOW what a decision to make. I was offered a choice of three treatments Im not same as you I had a little suspect top and definitely small cancer bottom lobe. My options were. Watch wait and see, SABR or VATS

Can you spend time researching and make a list of pros and cons

if you’ve had a lobectomy and you’re cancer free where are they wanting to monitor or remove?

I asked my surgeon what would he choose he said that he’s a surgeon so he’d have surgery

They did say I could speak to the radiologist if I wanted. I’m sorry I’m not much help. Hopefully others her I’ll have had similar

    Sending you a hug

  • Hi , sorry, haven't mad myself clear, I had a tumour removed from top lobe , came back TC-1 cancer . This was VATS This is why they are saying cancer free because its been removed. But as a precaution they want to remove the rest of the top lobe. I'm going for a CT scan and I would like to wait for the results.

  • Yes definitely

    Now I get it.

I think the scan may help your decision.

My surgeon took a wedge from my lower left lobe but wasn’t happy with the margins so he went back in and removed the lobe. It’s the smallest part I know and my op went from two hours to four. My decision was taken for me.

It’s a tricky one for you. You could ask  how fast the cancer grows and how often they would CT you?

    Good luck

  • Thank you ...that's a good help with those questions.

  • Hi6363 ,ln 2021 i was given the chance to watch and wait as i had a nodule which was 9mm and at the time of the scan it was not lighting up ,which they said meant it was not cancerous ,fast forward 6 months into may 2022 ,my follow up scan showed that the nodule had doubled ,and my consultant suggested that i have my middle lobe removed ,which i did last July ,the surgeon says she got everything and checked my lymph nodes which were also clear ,though i am still having follow ups ,for the next 5 years ,i feel ok physically ,mentally my head is all over the place at times ,all i can say ,if you go for watch and wait ,i know they will act speedily if anything needs sorting

  • Thanks for that...the tumour they removed was 15mm , and the said we have it all , and removing the lobe is a precaution....so so hard

  • They didn't remove the lobe at the time as the tumour  was near the bottom lobe , so didn't know if any had gone into there , but they said no it hasn't. Its thinking of the horrendous pain so soon after the first, which was only 7 weeks ago.....my heads spinning

  • I think it may be worth putting it to the back of your mind until you’ve spoken to the nurses.

Try and spoil yourself a little over Easter.

I have only had a wedge from top right and lower lobectomy and I am in pain and coughing. There’s now way I could think about an operation and I imagine you feel the same

Are you still in pain? What painkillers did you find the best.

I thought I had good pain threshold but I can jump with it. It gets to me

  • I wouldn't say in pain but uncomfortable at times, I'm only on paracetamol during the day if I need it , but take a Dihydrocodeine for bed. It feels like I have a band pulling tightly under my breast area. When it gets uncomfortable I press my hand under my breast seems to relive it . I'm not in pain if I cough but yawning is a task .

  • How long ago did you have your operation?
