I only got referred to the chest clinic because my rheumatologist wanted to change my medication for polymyalgia rheumatica. At that time I was on a daily prednisolone steroid dose of 30mg, and he wanted to prescribe methotrexate. That can affect the lungs, so I was sent off to get a chest x-ray.
All other tests were clear, but the x-ray showed a shadow so the round of tests began.
CT scan showed a 3-4cm growth in my lung, and a slightly larger one on my kidney. PET-CT followed, the lung growth out up but not the kidney. Ultrasound on kidney days that's benign.
Bronchoscopy failed, growth too far from already so was referred for a guided CT biopsy. Unfortunately there's a long waiting list for that, so have now been booked in for surgery on 12th April.
Wish me luck!
I do wish you luck. I’m in a similar situation. Just waiting to see if they think the nodule in my lung warrants a PET scan.
Good luck. My journey began on the 23rd January and the first guided needle CT biopsy available is 21st April, which is why they've suggested going straight to operation as they can get me in on the 12th.
I hope your op goes well. How are you coping in the meantime? X
Thank you. I'm struggling at times due to the pain from my other condition because I've had to reduce the steroids much quicker than would normally be the case. I was only diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica (like rheumatoid arthritis, but it affects muscles and tendons) in November and had 6 weeks sleeping on the sofa because I couldn't climb on the bed! Reducing steroids is supposed to be done slowly - to get to my current level would normally have taken until May, I did it in 5 weeks so the adrenal glands haven't kicked back in.
Apart from that, I'm in full planning mode - I've only just told my children (who both live abroad), and my brother because I was waiting to hear whether they'd send me for a biopsy. It's all happened so fast I'm still a bit shocked.
Hopefully they'll send you for a PET-CT - that gives a lot more information.
Carol x
I haven’t said anything to my family yet but I have mentioned it to one or two friends. Seems to render it less scary. I’ll speak to my ( adult) kids and my mum when I have more information. I like the sound of full planning mode. Sounds like me! X
Hello Carol, been thinking about you. I’ve just heard about the PET scan. Booked for tomorrow morning. Hope I don’t have to wait too long for results. Waiting is horrible. I hope you have lots of support and I hope your surgery is straightforward. Look after yourself x
Good luck with the PET scan. From memory, my GP contacted me very quickly (about the kidney which was benign, but hey ho, they got back to me). But chest clinic were also quick.
I'm never usually one to reach out for support but of course now I have to as my partner doesn't drive so has found somewhere to stay near the hospital when I'm admitted. Volunteers for lift to hospital (40+ miles away) have been plentiful and that's sorted, and arrangements for kitty sitting are in progress. Still in full planning mode but getting there!
Hope all goes well for you tomorrow. Not quite so noisy as the CT machine and I relaxed so much (deep breathing and concentration) that I fell asleep! x
Hello, hope you are doing ok in the run up to your surgery. The PET scan was fine. I have a follow up appointment next week to hear about results. I’m hoping to be able to forget about it over the Easter break but I’m feeling so anxious. X
Hi - because of the proposed junior doctors strike set for next week, my operation was bright forward and I had the nodule and the upper lobe removed yesterday.
They're fairly sure it's NOT cancer (1 8n 1000 chance - I'll take those 9dds)
Still 8n SECU at the moment and now they're reducing the morphine not quite as comfortable. I also have persistent low blood pressure for some reason.
I do hope the results of your scan are goodC x
Wow! You almost never hear of surgery being brought forward! I hope you’ll soon be out of ICU and feeling more comfortable. Great news that it’s unlikely to be cancer Take care x
