Hi, I feel as though this is the most horrendous week of my life. My dad, 76, has a 4.5cm mass on right lung. Due to his poor general fitness they are doubtful of curative care - we are waiting on lung function test to confirm this. We are going for more scans tomorrow to determine spread.
When they’ve looked back at scans, it looks as though it has been present since 2019.
I go from thinking that this whole situation is the end of the world to then thinking that it’s all going to be ok and we still have plenty of time.
I think (all a bit of a blur) at the initial appointment on Wednesday they said that they won’t do a PET scan nor biopsy if his lung function is not greater than 20%. Do this sound about right?
Thus is all so new and frightening for him - any advice of how to progress would be so appreciated. Thank you
I'm sorry you're faced with this sudden uncertainty.
A biopsy is only useful to guide treatment and it's not without risk of complications, so I can understand them not wanting to do one if his lung function is very poor. When my team wasn't sure of whether or not I had a recurrence they were extremely reluctant to do a biopsy because of the risk of a pneumothorax and I had 80% lung capacity.
Hopefully the new scans will provide more clarity about whether there are any treatment options.
Yes, it’s the risk of pneumothorax they are concerned about. Thank you so much for you reply - it means so much as this anxious time
