Hi everyone, I’ve just joined the forum today
My current story is that my Dad has just been told they have found cancer cells in his left lung. He initially had a cough that wasn’t going away and I told him to get it checked as it had persisted or more than 3 weeks. His cough started just after he had his 4th booster jab
He was referred to have a lung function test which was cancelled as he was ill with a virus (not Covid) and had a high temp etc. He was given antibiotics which cleared up his chest infection. After that he had an x-ray which was clear and then a CT scan on his chest which showed enlarged lymph nodes / nodules on his left lung. He was then referred to have a lung biopsy which revealed that they found cancer cells but no mass/tumour. He was due to have a PET scan on Monday but they had to cancel due to technical issues so was rescheduled for Wednesday. He said the test was fine and explained the procedure to me. He’s also received two other appointments which he wasn’t aware he needed. One is for a brain CT scan which they tried to get him in to have at the same time as the PET scan but didn’t have any availability so they’ve booked him in for this Saturday morning. He also has to have a gastroscopy on Tuesday.
I don’t think he will get the results until all tests have been completed and they have a whole picture of what is going on and able to give him a full diagnosis but obviously I’m incredibly anxious about them. He’s been told that if the cancer is localised in his lung then they will treat it aggressively with chemo and radiotherapy combined.
I believed at the time that his lymph nodes / nodules were only enlarged because he was fighting a chest infections so it’s come as a shock to all of us. He’s only in his early 60’s and generally fit and well except for having rheumatoid arthritis and high blood pressure both which he takes medication for to keep under control.
I made the mistake of Googling it and it made me feel even more anxious So I’m hoping that speaking to real people who have been through or are going through this can provide me with some comfort in some way. My friends know but they can’t really relate and I’ve never known anyone to have cancer in my family before so it’s relatively all knew to me.
Thank you if you’ve managed to read this far and I’ll try not to write an essay in my future posts! Sending everyone love ️
Hi P
Take no notice of Google it's not the full story, though my specialist wasn't very positive at the time either by saying " there is some hope" I took that to mean there wasn't, anyway in my case I was diagnosed with lung cancer in Oct 21, operation Nov 21, cancer removed with lymph nodes and 3rd of my right lung, but cancer clear now and back to my full time job. Hope this gives you some comfort.
iam over50 (well 72 now)
It's exactly 12 months since my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer...... Believe me the worse time was the waiting for results and a plan of action. Aggressive chemo x4 and 3 weekly iv of immunotherapy...... We do have our dark days...... But have had lots and lots of joyful days too(even had 2 weeks in Greece last August........ He is stable now....... This site and the roy castle site has helped me and there are many uplifting stories..... Once you have a plan from oncology things will hopefully look better....... I still get the middle of night gremlins though at times(4 am now)....... Good luck
Similar story here but my mum is 48 and after being fobbed off with several lots of antibiotics for a chest infection took 6 months to get an xray, 2nd xray has now shown masses in both lungs now.. terrified to find out just how long she has been left with this terrible illness.. i hope the results are positive for you and they treat him asap and effectively.. so many people have been neglected and let down
Hi, so sorry to hear about your dad. and yeah google can sometimes be a bit of an overload. I'm a bit new to lung cancer and like you looking for support/help/advice for people who are in the same boat.
I'm here for my mum, who's in her 70's but not in the best of health as she has COPD, but we are 2 weeks into radiotherapy treatment and she's got pneumonia. but you just have to stay positive. x
