Hello everyone
This week my mum has been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer , it seems it’s only in her left lung but the tumour is already 7 cm

doctor said that it has not spread to other body parts,

we waiting for brain scans to confirm all

She is 52 years old, recently stopped smoking as she was a chronic smoker

overall health is very good no other issues

only symptom is a chronic cough developed 2 months ago

surgery is not possible due to the size of tumour

she is due to start chemo and radiotherapy next week

I would like to get in touch with other people affected by this

thank you and wish you all health and best of luck Fingers crossed

  • hi I have stage 4 lung cancer had immunopherapy but wasn't shrinking tumour, just finishedc12 days radiotherapy , gad a lesion come up on my hand to ve told today its to do with my lung cancer which has put me on a really low place again

  • Hi Alex.94

So sorry that you have cause to be on here.

Your Mum's Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) is 'limited', as it has not spread beyond the one lung.

The positive is that SCLC generally responds well to chemo in terms of shrinking the tumour.  The smaller the tumour becomes, the more effective the radiotherapy can be.  The chemo will also help with the cough.

She is relatively young and has no underlying health issues; more positives!

The chemoradiiation treatment for SCLC can be brutal as it is a lot of treatment over a relatively short time, but be assured it is very 'doable'.  The side effects of the treatment, especially the radiotherapy, are cumulative . Tiredness is the main one.

    Hope this helps a bit.

  • Thank you so much for this!
It does make me feel more positive

    Best wishes for you

  • Hi Alex, I’ve just joined the forum too as my dad has just been diagnosed with lung cancer but he’s still got to have a brain CT scan and a gastroscopy yet before they can tell him what stage it is before we know if it’s treatable. The waiting for the results is making me so anxious. 51 is such a young age and I’m sure she will fight it every step of the way Muscle tone2 Also massive achievement to her for stopping smoking! Clap tone2

  • Sorry to hear this, I has nsclc had surgery, is surgery nit an option? Iv been quite ignoranant to a lot of ins n outs.i only asked will I survive and is it curable , they said yes so never asked a lot so don't know if surgery is an option for everyone

  • Hi Alex,

How are you? How has your Mum been coping with the combined treatment? My Mum is in a similar position however with NSCLC. 6cm tumor and started combined radio/chemo last week. They've (hopefully temporarily) stopped chemo this week after taking bloods but she fels relatively well. Surgery also wasn't an option for her due to the size of the tumor. Would be great to hear how your Mum is doing as it's a lot and how you're coping with it all.

  • Hi Wave my mum has been diagnosed yesterday with nsclc. She’s 77. She’s in good health except an intermittent minor cough and fatigue. 3.2 cm tumour and also spread into chest and neck lymph nodes. We are awaiting genomic blood test and biopsy results to learn re staging and best treatment. I am terrified tbh due to poor prognosis I read re lung cancer.

  • Hi there sorry to hear about your mum … I have NSCLC stage 3 … and my treatment was a 6 week chemo/ radiotherapy plan … so I had RT every day and chemo once a week . You can see my updates on my profile page …. As Kegsy said it’s a tough old treatment but it is manageable…. Hope this helps,  Elly x

  • Thanks so much. Really useful to hear other people’s stories. Hope you get a great result from your next scan xx

  • Thank you Jill , keep us posted , ask questions anytime x
