In September mum was diagnosed stage 4 originally they said they couldn’t do anything but here we are lots and lots of tests later and she can have chemo which she starts 11/01 . She seems to be ok with it but I. I deep done she is petrified. She is 82 and lives alone in Essex and I am In Cardiff. I’m scared she will be Ill & there is No one to be with her.

any advice ? Any were I can turn to get help ?

  • Hi Burney and welcome,

Sorry to hear about your Mum. If I read between the lines a bit, I'm guessing she's the independent type and either used to looking after herself or already has some sort of support organised. Going forward she'll need to step this up because the chemo will likely leave her too tired to manage as she is. Make sure she's aware of this and is happy to be given a helping hand.

Her local council's Adult Social Care will be the first port of call, so get onto this asap. Getting care stepped up/down is easier than setting it up in the first place, so they need to know about her. (They won't drag her off to a home if that concerns her, care at home and in the community is where it's at these days because it's cheaper.)

Make sure her gas/electric suppliers know she's vulnerable - they'll prioritise her for power if there are outages.

    kind regards,
    Steve

  • Hi   a very warm welcome from me as well. Sorry to hear about mum. It is scary when a loved one gets cancer, and not living close does make it hard for you both.

has given some very good advise already, I just wanted to add the other support groups that are available for you to join here on the Macmillan community

    Carers only

supporting someone with incurable cancer group

You can also call the support line on 0808 808 00 00 who are available 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm.

There is also a buddy service that Macmillan provide. It may be of interest to your mum, especially as she is on her own. I'll pop a link to the information page below for you.
