In November 2022 i was diagnosed with having two tumours on my left lung , one at the top and one at the bottom. My treatment plan was to have targeted radical high dose radiotherapy ( SABR) to the tumours, a total of eleven treatments.
On the first preparation for treatment appointment i was informed that i would have a moulded mask made for me . The mask would protect my head, face , shoulders and Major organs whilst i was having treatment. the mask was made of perforated plasic with a mouth breathing hole. When i had the first fitting of the mask i was finding it difficult to breath properly, and panicked a bit, and was feeling very uncomfortable, i questioned whether i would be able to tolerate the mask. I thought about the situation all the time before treatment started, and evetually came up with a plan. Prior to each treatment i applied vic vapour rub to my throat and chin , and let the vapours go up my nose, i applied vaseline to my lips , so they didn' stick together. Finally l practiced deep breathing exercises, slowly breathing in through my nose, and breathing out through persed lips. It worked , and i sailed through treatment,
Never give up .I hope that my experience will help you if you have to wear a mask it worked for me.
What a caring post to share for others going through RT and some great tips regarding the mask .. I also struggled a little with the mask but what I have found works for me was the complimentary team at the hospital , they gave me a little squeezy star to hold in my hand , helped to control my breathing and they also talk to me via the monitor … I also found having the eye holes removed helped allow more air to circulate…. For anyone else having to wear a mask , please don’t worry , they do get you through it and they understand if you feel panicky etc …. Day5 for me today and I’m not dreading it like Day 1 so it does get better love Elly x
