Husband had large tumour  on kidney. Has had kidney removed. However he has small nodulesnin his lungs. Biggest one is 10mm and has grown.

Saw lung  oncologist  today and his advice is to wait until August to see how fast they are growing and start treatment after that. Probably mixture of Immunotherapy and targeted treatment.

He did say chemotherapy  wouldn't be effective.

Daughter, age 38, is struggling g with his diagnosis  and that treatment can only slow down the cancer , not cure it. Has asked me why chemotherapy  wouldn't be effective. It wasn't a question  I,  or my husband , thought to ask.

Does anyone know ow why?

Many thanks

  • Hi
I am from the Kidney group but I noticed your post . . . . . . Do you know which is the primary cancer?  I have kidney cancer which has spread to my lungs.  Chemo is not effective on kidney cancer (and a few other cancers besides).  I'm on immunotherapy.

One other thing, it's hoped that cancer treatment will control the growth. This can be stopping the growth, in both the metastases and the original tumour or shrinking it.  There are a lot of new treatments out there.  I am also a member of the "Incurables" group https://community.macmillan.org.uk/cancer_experiences/living-with-incurable-cancer-forum.  There are groups for patients and families.  Many in my group have been given a prognosis and many outlived the doctors estimate due to developments of new approaches/drugs etc.

  • That's really helpful. It is kidney cancer thatbhas spread ro the lungs.

The tumour on the kidneynwas 8 to 9 cm. Do they removed the kidney.

Nodules in both lungs.Mostly very small. One has grown since first scan to 10mm. Consultant thinks  that is still small so wait and see before starting treatment.

Don you know why chemotherapy is ineffective  on kidney and other cancers?

    How is your treatment going?

  • Hi Allyson, welcome to the group but sorry you find yourself here.

Although chemotherapy is still used a lot in cancer treatment both Immunotherapy and targeted treatment are newer drugs which are very effective and not so harsh on the body. As your husband has had one kidney removed, I would think that chemotherapy would be to harsh on his remaining kidney.

The group that Mmum has shared with you is for patients only, but there is another support group you could join where you will be able to connect with other members in a similar situation to yourself.

I don't think they know this, any more than they understand why treatment X for cancer Y will work with one person but not for another.

10 years ago treatment for kidney cancer used to be try Radiotherapy for 2 years.  Doesn't work, ineffective and you're dead in 2 years.

It's a mixed bag with my treatment.  I'm a star responder and the cancer is under control.  But it's worked too well, my kidney function dipped into the amber zone, too much inflammation and I'm on a pause right now.   I might be able to resume w/c 20th June.  Stage 3 immune related adverse event to give it its proper term.

  • Many thanks

    Will take a look
