My husband has been diagnosed with mesothelioma

My husband was diagnosed with mesothelioma in January. This condition is terminal. He is having chemotherapy which has reduced the size of the tumour by 5ml. We are basically just buying time with this treatment. After he has completed the 6 sessions of chemotherapy. The doctor has said about giving him immunotherapy, we really don't know much about this treatment and I wonder if anyone who has any experience of it could help us. Thank you

  • Hi Nanru

If you click on my profile picture you will be able to read about me and my husband. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2021 and although they are treating it as conventional lung cancer it is linked to his employment in the asbestos industry and could still possibly be mesothelioma as we have been told his biopsy results were equivocal.

He had four cycles of triple therapy (carboplatin, pemetrexed and pembrolizumab) followed by 5 cycles of double therapy (pemetrexed and pembrolizumab) and is now on immunotherapy only (pembrolizumab).

His cancer is inoperable and incurable but the treatment has slowed the progress of the cancer. And at present he is “stable”. He did (and still does) have various side effects but they are bearable and the cancer team are brilliant at helping deal with them.

Immunotherapy can be of benefit with incurable/terminal cancer by boosting the immune system to help slow the cancer spread.  Every patient’s treatment these days is quite specific to them and is aimed at giving them the best chance. Not everyone is suitable for immunotherapy but it sounds like the doctor thinks your husband could be suitable.

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your message, your journey sounds similar to ours. We are hoping that immunotherapy will be suitable, it was suggested that this would be used after the six cycles of chemotherapy. Best wishes to you and your family.

  • Hello, how is your husband ? My husband is on immunotherapy now, seems to be going well, no side affects at all ….
