Chest infection Pre treatment

Hi

My husband received a diagnosis of lung cancer with bone metastases in February. The tumour is at the base of the left lung and is blocking the ‘drain’. Surgery is not an option. He has developed a chest infection 4 weeks ago that antibiotics are struggling to overcome. They are draining his lung but fear some bacteria has solidified and might be hard to remove. He cannot have chemo whilst he has the infection but we worry that even if the infection does get knocked on the head he will still be rather weak and react badly to chemo. Is there anyone here who has experienced a similar situation? We feel we are in a race to stop the cancer spread but are being hindered by his own body’s behaviour. One dose of chemo might shrink the tumour to allow the lung to ‘drain’ in its own…without it we fear we don’t have that long. The oncologist described it as a mucky lung cancer!

  • Hi Bramley, welcome to the group but sorry to hear about your husband.

I have no personal experience of this sorry, I just wanted to come by and give some support to you.

What a very worrying situation you are in. I have heard from people before when chemo has been stopped because of infection. Hopefully someone who has had this happen will be along soon to chat with you.

You need to take time to look after yourself as well during this difficult time. The Macmillan support line is available 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm if you need to chat to someone. It’s a free call number 0808 808 00 00.

I really do hope these antibiotics kick in soon for your husband, so he can start the treatment he needs. Please let us know how he gets on x

  • Thank you so much for replying Chelle. It was just really helpful to write it down and if there is somebody who has experienced something similar it would be good to chat to them.
