Hi. I'm new here and after a bit of advice please. My mum was diagnosed with sclc in Nov 21 and it had spread to her liver. After 4 sessions of chemo and immunotherapy she had a scan in Jan and the tumours had shrunk a lot. The consultant said he had never seen such a good response and as the chemo had worked so well she would be offered it again in the future. She had another scan last week and we went for the results yesterday and they have said there's nothing more they can do and all treatment has stopped to say we are devastated is an understatement. What are the chances of getting a second opinion thanks

  • Hi Sutty,

Really sorry to hear about your situation - my dad was diagnosed with SCLC in Jan this year and is going through his treatment at the moment, scan is next week to find out. I don’t have solid advice for you on this as I’ve not been in the situation but you’re definitely entitled to get a second opinion from other oncologists. They may think the same but it’s definitely worth trying.

Best of luck and I hope you find a doctor who can help

  • Hi sutty74 welcome to the group, but I am so sorry to hear this about your mum. What a terrifying time you are having. I know when you are in these consultations you do not take everything in, especially when it is bad news. Has the treatment stopped because there has been significant growth in the tumours? If you are unclear on this I would phone your mums lung nurse or oncology team for some clarification.

Everyone is entitled to a 2nd opinion. The best person to ask about this is your mums oncologist. Do not worry he will not be offended by you asking, this happens all the time. Your mums care is the oncologist main priority, and he will advise as to whom the best person is for a 2nd opinion.

It may also be worth asking the oncologist if there are any trials available in your area, in which your mum can take part.

I am so sorry this has happened to your mum. If you need to talk to someone to help you through this difficult time please do call the Macmillan support line on 0808 808 00 00. They are available 7 days a week from 8am until 8pm.

    Take care x
