Shock diagnosis

Hi there, 3 days ago I got the devastating news that I had a mass in my lung that had spread to lymph nodes in my chest and a suspicious lesion on my liver. I am 58, normally fit and well and the only symptoms I had were a diagnosis of reflux at Christmas. Various aches and pains have seen me back and forth to A/E and in the last 3 weeks have had bad rib pain. This led to CT scans for a possible clot and that is when the 'lesion' was discovered. I am now waiting for a biopsy to look for treatment.

I feel lost. The waiting is unbearable especially when trying to manage the pain. I have great support from family and friends but watched my best friend die from a tumour 6 years ago. The consultant said there is reason for hope..I am fit and well, dont smoke or drink and am not overweight. But I am struggling to get my head around this. I want to be strong but am not there yet. It's like a nightmare I can't wake up from. Any advice much appreciated.

  • I was initially diagnosed 3 weeks ago and now waiting for the results of PET CT scan, brain scan and needle biopsy. Hopefully this week when a treatment plan will be discussed. There are many more options for treatment now so try to stay positive.

Firstly sleep. I’ve found sleep meditation on Utube that’s really helped me to sleep better. Anxiety can be crippling so try to give yourself positive messages and distract yourself with any activities that take up your brain space. I started by just watching box sets from beginning to end. It helped me to relax. Since then I’ve carried on with my life as normally as possible. I’ve set up a messenger group for my children so I only need to tell them the news once. Try talking to one of the support nurses on here or The Roy Castle Lung Cancer site. Personally, I’ve found the RC site more supportive. Stay away from Dr. Google as the information is not always up to date and can be misleading. I only ask about what I know currently as what if’s are not really helpful. Try to have a Rainbow diet and continue to exercise as it’s all good for your body.

I hope your treatment goes well. With love xxx

  • I was in exactly the same position as you just before Christmas I was diagnosed with lung cancer which had spread to lymph nodes. Please take hart it can be treated and in some cases cured. I am currently having chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatment which is going well. Just like you I’m 57 don’t smoke or drink but cancer isn’t choosey. Try and stay positive do things that make you happy and make a good memory every day. I know it hard to get you head around at this stage but when you have a treatment plan in place things will get better. In the mean time if you need to vent or talk please feel free to do so on here we are all here to support each other or you can message me I’ve sent you a friend request on here all you need to do is accept if you wish. In the mean time try and have. A good day
