I was diagnosed yesterday with lung cancer and the consultant is recommending surgery. I had an x-ray just before Xmas which showed a shadow and since then I have had the usual tests. Rightly or wrongly I never told my loved ones. I did not want to worry them as it could have been a infection or inflammation though I was 99% sure it was cancer. I now have the painful task of telling  them - 3 adult children, girlfriend and cat. I don't know what to say to them. I feel very guilty and ashamed (smoker). I also feel very scared, not so much about the surgery being successful, it's more about surviving the surgery. The consultant did tell me what type of cancer it was and what type of surgery. I didn't take it in. I have left a message for the Macmillan nurse to ask her if she can inform me about this

Good luck to everyone

X

  • Good evening,

Im so sorry to hear about the unfortunate news.  I had to go through telling my 2 daughters and parents which was very difficult to do.  I went through so many emotions due to the shock as my surgeon and I were confident it was going to be benign as I'm not a smoker and I'm only 44.  I had a small lump removed with the middle right lobe last month.  Last week they said it was cancer so now I have to go through lobectomy surgery again to remove my lower lobe too.  It’s scary to go through all this alone but be strong and you will get through it before you know it.

  • Hi

i had a lobectomy on 30th December (R upper lobe) please don’t feel ashamed, I too was a smoker. No symptoms & almost didn’t go for 2nd CT scan as I had other health issues. Don’t know what stage my cancer was, but will find out on 7/2/22 when I see my surgeon again. Made a really good recovery from op (Drs called me their star patient !) Surgeon fairly certain no lymph node involvement , ? Need some chemo/radiotherapy but looks unlikely so please keep your chin up !
    wishing you all the best

    Mary

    Good morning lovely people.

2nd CT scan on 17 April this tear (R upper lobectomy Dec. 2022) recent scan has shown my middle lobe is compressed. Having bronchial lavage on the 23rd May. Letter to GP from consultant described it as possible middle lobe syndrome,  GP unsure what this is. Regular chest infections but one in December this year & a few weeks ago really floored me. Throat is quite raw & my voice is quite hoarse. Anyone able to suggest any ideas on what's going on with me ?

  • Hi Mary

I'm so glad you made quick recovery and hope it’s good news when you see your Surgeon. It is crazy how cancer can affect your life and loved ones around you like not being able to see anyone as isolating and changing how you live your life as enjoying the present by making every minute count.   I make a point of doing something new once a week now rather than sitting at home and crying all day.  Everyone finds there own way of dealing with things but life is too short so enjoy it to the max.

    Love Sweet x
