Hi all, thanks for having me here.
My dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer. He had a lung function test last Friday and a PET scan on Saturday. We haven't had the results yet so it's a waiting game to see how bad it is.
When the specialist gave the diagnosis, he also mentioned carrying out a biopsy but we haven't heard anything about this either so far.
All e know from the original CT-scan and chest xray is that there is a large mass on his left lung, a mass on his right lung and his lymph node(s) are enlarged.
He was taken into hospital a few weeks ago where we found out that he had paraneoplastic syndrome, which of course is a regular occurrence in lung cancer patients.
I live in the Netherlands, my parents in the south east of England. Due to covid, I haven't seen them for the last 2 years, when they came over here for my 40th birthday.
I'm a nurse and the health care in the Netherlands just seems to go faster than it does in the UK. It was a 9 week wait from dad having the original CT scan to getting the results. Something I'm not very happy about as he seems to have deteriorated over that time.
So apart from introducing myself, I wanted to know if anybody has an idea of result waiting times in the UK at the moment (particularly in the south east/Kent).
I'm not good at waiting as for my job I'm used to getting results and making a plan based on the facts what I have. The whole having to wait for more news is doing my head in, as I can't do anything else from here at the moment.
Take care all

Hi Kelouise, welcome to the group, but sorry to hear about your Dad. It must be very difficult when you live so far away.
At the beginning of a cancer diagnoses, there are lots of tests, CT scans, pet scans, X-rays and finally a biopsy. The Oncoligist will then meet with other specialists in what is called an MDT meeting. This is when they look at all of the results and discuss together the most suitable treatment plan. The biopsy result usually takes the longest, approximately 2 weeks.
I know how frustrating all the waiting is, I have been through it myself. It feels like nobody is doing anything, but in fact there is a lot going on behind the scenes with these appointments being mapped out and planned.
Hopefully your Dad will get the appointment through soon for the biopsy, and he will be on the road to treatment. X
Thank you so much for your reply.
I’m not going to lie, it’s really hard waiting, something I’m not good at.
when the diagnosis was confirmed, there was talk of a biopsy and pet scan. We’ve heard nothing about the biopsy, but he had the pet and a lung function instead.
What i’m thinking is the cancer is so advamced there is no reason to perform a biopsy. I’m 99% certain he has SCLC. Judging by his previous scans/bloods and the fact I can read between the lines.
At the end of the day, I just want a plan if he can be treated or if there is nothing that can be done we can start to plan for that.

The biopsy is always last on the list of tests it seems. Fear of the unknown is the worst. We seem to be able to cope better once we know what is ahead. Xx
