Hello all

Posting on behalf of my mum, she’s stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma NSLC. She’s 57, never smoked, healthy weight. We’ve no idea of possible cause.

It has spread to the bones (in her hips, pelvis and spine with vertebrae collapse), liver, lymph nodes and adrenal glands.

We still don’t know if there’s treatment options, she meets the oncologist next week.

Is anyone in a similar position? We’d love as much time as possible but don’t want to make her feel any worse as she’s in an awful lot of pain already. We’re hoping for targeted radiotherapy especially on the bones.

Any tips for pain management, good drugs to request, symptoms to look out for?

Mentally and emotionally she’s doing great. We’re all heartbroken but we are still managing to laugh and love every day. We know her days are very numbered so we want to make them count and to be as pain free as possible.

  • Hi there

So sorry to hear this and a similar diagnosis to my mum which happened about twelve weeks ago after a constant burning pain on her left side same as your mum really healthy etc it just came from nowhere

My mum has a mass in her lung and boney mets she is currently on her second round of chemo and also immunotherapy have they done a pdl 1 test they will probably do this to see if she is eligible for immunotherapy the drugs are in my bio if you take a look at that

my mum is also due to start radio therapy for symptom and pain management to help stabilise the bones so I’m sure this will also be an option for your mum

so pain wise my mums gp in the end referred us to the palliative community team as mum has been in dreadful pain, they have completely changed her drugs she now takes oxycoedine and has a slow release fentanyl patch on which has helped

also half a tablet of pregablin for nerve pain

she is also on sodium picosulphate as the pain meds were causing her to be constipated and takes anti sickness all the time too as the chemo is making her feel sick but other than that doesn’t seem too bad so far

it’s worth seeing if you can be referred to the palliative team as they have really helped my mum and we now have a referral to our local hospice too to talk about symptom relief

anything I can do to offer any advice let me know x

    take care xx
