My 77 year old husband has lung cancer stage 4 and prostate cancer stage 4. He has had immunotherapy for two years and this stopped 2 months ago. His first scan since the immunotherapy stopped has shown anincrease in the size of the tumour and a nodule in the lung. Previous scans have been stable.
He has been told that this may be due to swelling which can occur during and after immunotherapy but if not this then he may be eligible for atrial of a new drug.
Does anyone have any experience of these circumstances?
Liz
Hello, sorry to hear about your husband.
I personally don't have experience with immunotherapy, my lung cancer was treated with radiotherapy alone, but I have a friend who was diagnosed with SCLC in 2023, it was at the stage where it was inoperable and incurable and she was given chemotherapy as palliative care only. After her chemo she was put on a two year course of immunotherapy, this course finished recently, but, she has had her immunotherapy extended, which we are all pleased about as she has been so well on it and all her follow up scans have shown stable disease.
I'm not sure why some people are allowed extended immunotherapy and some are not, as you say, your husband's previous scans have shown stable disease. Maybe it's the hospital's protocol not to extend it. I would ask the oncology team why it has not been extended.
Best wishes to you and your husband.
Ann
Hi Ann,
Thank you for that. Will check with them but we were told immunotherapy could only be given for two years and after that it didn’t make any difference as it’s job was done.
Things are developing so quickly with cancer drugs and information changing so hopefully new medication or more immunotherapy will become available.
Kind regards
Liz
