Hi there, my mum has recently been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. She had a chest X-ray where they noticed a mass. She then went for a CT scan and bloods taken. We’ve since found out that there is fluid taking up space where half her left lung should be, hence why she is breathless and coughing. She has a large pleural effusion and they drained some fluid off and found cancer cells in there. They also said it had spread to her liver. They told her she would only have months to live if untreated but they can prolong her life with treatment. We are beyond devastated.

She was given a bronchoscopy but they have told us the results were insufficient. We aren’t sure what this means. They have told her now she will be referred to oncology but first she must have a thoracoscopy done on Wednesday.

Mum says apart from the annoying cough she feels relatively normal and was so shocked at the outcome, she said to me looking at it surely she would be in more pain?

What does this all mean? We are so frightened and praying she can have this treatment but so worried about what the treatment may do to her also.

thank you x

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to her liver and I know what a difficult time this will be for the whole family.

I can't help with your questions, as I had a different type of cancer, but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies yet. Replying to you will 'bump' your post back to the top of the discussion list where it'll be more easily seen.

In several places in your post you say that you don't know what various things mean and I wondered if your mum would give permission for you to speak to her cancer nurse specialist (CNS) or consultant so that you can ask questions about her diagnosis and treatment.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could pop something about your mum's diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
