Hi I've just been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer not curable but treatable seeing the chemo consultant on Friday. Terrified, not eating sleeping hard to think about anything else. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi Lawsy,

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. My Dad was diagnosed with Small Cell (treatable but not curable) at the end of June. So far, he has had 2 cycles of Chemo (Carboplatin and Etoposide) and immunotherapy (Atezolizumab) he is due his 3rd cycle tomorrow but at the moment he is on antibiotics so we are not sure if it will be going ahead tomorrow. His treatment plan is 4 cycles of chemo and immunotherapy every 3 weeks and then to continue on immunotherapy for up to 2 years providing the cancer stays stable.

I can only speak from little experience with a parent being diagnosed but it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions everyday and you just have to take it day by day, my Dad tortures himself with guilt and some days he is just in a daze. I would encourage speaking to MacMillan when you are ready for it.

There are lots of amazing people on here, this forum has been great for me. Small Cell does generally have a good response to chemotherapy, my Dad’s Oncologist told him to stay positive, keep healthy, plenty of rest and fluids and to look after himself.

Will you have your treatment plan on Friday?

    All the best. X

  • Hiya lawsy yes it's a real shock to your system and it upsets your whole life. I've got incurable lung cancer but treatable. My world came tumbling down for the 1st 6 weeks as I couldn't believe it ? But when I started treatment I thought there is only one way to go and that is up ? Positivity helps so stay positive. I'm on tablet chemo so I think of it like this. Tablet is my friend, cancer may take my life, but it won't run my life. Live life to the full enjoy. Hope you get on OK on Friday. Take care
