Hello,  new to this site, just been diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. Due to start immunotherapy and chemo this Thurs. How on earth are you supposed to think and feel, such a huge thing to get your head around. Thought diagnoses of MS was bad enough! Can anyone tell me about shampoo, toothpaste, soaps and moisturisers. So much info out there, I don't know where to begin. Jo

  • I'm the same as you.... I find out tomorrow what treatment but they think I'll be having immunolgy. Can't get my head around all this... How can life change so quickly ?

I didn't even know we had to worry about moisturers etcxxxx

It's incredibly scarey and upsetting and I keep thinking how on earth do we change our mind sets! As treatment gets nearer I keep thinking I don't want it but... is it worth all the disruption as blood tests and covid tests and isolating come in to what I thought would be 3 weeks free in-between treatments. Best of luck to you and your journeyx

  • What's strange for me is that I feel the same as always but at the time everything has changed. I'm going to try and be strong and battle this thing...I've not stopped crying since I found out on Thursday but I'm now just eager to start treatment.

Wishing you tons of luck xxx

My suggestions would be.. get some difflam oral rinse for your mouth if that gets sore, the dark blue capped aveeno is really good, use a baby tooth brush and speak to your dentist for toothpaste, use simple soap (no perfume/nasties) these are just afew of the things I’ve done for my mum who’s currently at war with lung cancer aswell as mets.. not too sure about the shampoo one though sorry x

Thanks so much for your suggestions, so sorry your Mum is at War, she must feel some comfort you are helping x

  • I was given Chlorohexidine mouthwash by the hospital during chemo, if they don't provide this for you it can be bought over the counter at many chemists. If this still doesn't prevent mouth ulcers or similar problems I suggest you don't waste money on over the counter treatments but ask your GP for a prescription treatment, that worked for me.

As far as shampoo is concerned Johnson's baby shampoo or equivalent is probably best.

It's also a good idea to take your temperature daily so you can spot any unusual increase which might flag up infections so this can be nipped in the bud.

I hope your treatments go well and are successful..

  • Hello just been reading at some comments about sores mouths infections.is this all down to chemo and what treatment you are given. I'm seeing the consultant today to find out what my treatment options are going to be for me so I will ask him this question. Its all so scary Fearful still can't take it in ?

Hiya, thanks for the temperature tip. We used to use chlorohexadine at work for cleaning venepuncture sites!  Does salt Walter and/or bicarb work? As you say GP is probably where I'll get something if salt water doesn't work. Thanks againx

You are right it's all very scary and  hard to take in, I have no idea how to think and feel. I do wish you all the luck today with your consultant x

  • Hiya saw the consultant this afternoon but they are still waiting for two biopsy results to come back, so I am still in the position. Got to wait another 2 weeks before any treatment Sleepy lifes a bummer at the moment x
