I'm 42, ex smoker.  2 Weeks ago I coughed up a small amount of blood, then nothing for 4 days and then I coughed up a tiny bit more. Absolutely no blood since.

I have had previous investigations a few years ago after a really bad chest infection, I had a CT, a Bronscopy and although results showed signs of infection there were no cancer cells detected.

Now just under 2 years later, I now cough up blood, my GP sends me for a red flag xray which shows an opacity on my mid right lobe. So now I've been referred for a red flag CT.

I feel absolutely fine, fit, healthy no plural pain, no coughing up phelm, nothing, my GP sounded my chest and he said it sounds clear, so why does xray show an opacity and why the small amounts of blood 2 weeks ago!!

I'm perplexed, worried and a bit petrified. At least if I felt sick then Id know my body isn't right, but I feel well!

I've two young children. 2 and 5. So whatever is going on inside me I will fight it tooth and nail for them, but I,can't help but feel this is very surreal

Anyway thank you for reading my vent.

Sending strength and love to you all xx

  • Hi RoseyK welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here. It is terrifying when you think you may have cancer, and having 2 young children as well I can understand how scared you must be.  It is quite common for this situation to feel surreal and that it is happening to someone else, rather than yourself.  I think a lot of us felt like that in the beginning.

Opacity can happen for a whole range of conditions, but your GP is right to refer you for a fast tracked CT, I am sure you will want to find out as quickly as possible what this may be. If it is cancer, then early diagnoses is the key, and the fact that you are young and feeling fit really does stand you in good stead if you need treatment.

It will be impossible not to worry whilst you wait for the CT and the results, and I hope that coming here to talk and off load some of your worry will help. We are here to support you through this difficult time.

    Take care x

    Hi,

Thank you so much for the reply and reassurances.

My CT scan is booked for next weekend. I've been through this process before and this time round I am feeling less anxious but quite detached from it really. It's a strange feeling. I think it's self protection.

I can only hope that they don't find anything sinister but the reality is they might and I will process that when I have to.

I will just take this one step at a time.

    Thank you again

    Xx

  • Roseyk,

Opacity shows up in Inflamation of the Lung, I have radiation Pnumonitis which showed up as ground glass Opacity, but  inflamation, shows up, agree with Chelle, it is good your doctor has booked you in for a CT scan, if things can be cought early it is much better, so better safe than sorry, I wish my doctor had booked me in for one in 2018 when I was complaining of respiratory problems, so like everything, as you say one step at a time.

    Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I am sorry to hear of your condition, how does it affect you? Is there treatment to ease the symptoms?

I have been very fortunate as in everything is happening very quickly, I had my CT scan yesterday, which was only 3 days after my x-ray results. I was told the results will take two weeks.

We have a caravan by the sea and me, my husband and two kids are here at it now. I want to enjoy this break and make memories before results come in.

I feel fit and well, I just can't understand why my lungs wouldn't be working well but show no symptoms. The body is an odd machine!!

I hope and pray my results come through clear, but whatever my fate is then I will take it on and deal with it day by day.

Best wishes to you and everyone on this bumpy scary road!

    Xx

  • Hi Roseyk, thanks for your reply, glad to hear you are at your caravan, I also hope your results are clear.

There is treatment for radiation Pnumonitis, they give you Prednisolone, a steroid, in my case after five days on Prednisolone I had some kind of mental fit, happens very rarely with steroids, ( am keeping away from steroids) I was taking Ibuprofen before that, this kept the inflammation down to a normal level, so have carried on taking Ibuprofen now for nearly a year, taking a high dosage though, had an appointment with an Oncologist yesterday and an Xray, the Xray shows not a lot of change since my last Xray, which is good, if anything it may have shrunk a bit, but you can not see much on the Xray and the Oncologist said the cells maybe dead or not he could not tell me anything really as the Xray shows too little information, he says until I have a CT scan in 4 months he is no wiser than I am, I think they are mainly looking on an Xray to see if it has increased, my tumour shrunk by 50% 8 months after radiation treatment, so not readily visible on an Xray now.

Wish you well, and hope you are enjoying yourself at your caravan, and try not to think of the worst results, I know I did when my chest Xray showed up something, and was put on fast track, just as Corona lock down came in, that slowed everything down a bit, but luckily got a biopsy, before my radiation treatment, as they were not going to give me one, and were going to put me straight in for radiation therapy, I asked my Oncologist yesterday why my tumour It was not operable, he said it was because of lockdown, nothing else, not sure I would have chosen an operation anyway.

    All the best. Xx
